The common-sense steps to new employment are:
Get your act together and ensure time is on your side - as best you can
Uncover exceptionally well-aligned, unfulfilled needs
Develop your compelling case for each high-quality opportunity
Make direct connections
Make your compelling case
Follow-up as necessary to reinforce your case for the match and your strong interest

The ultimate question you need to be able to nail is – ‘why you, for us?’

The vital competitive advantage in a career transition is – being able to make direct connections with high potential employment stakeholders in target organizations.

Dedication
A special word of thanks to the thousands of business professionals who took part in systematic career transition group training and/or one-on-one coaching with Maverick Coach Mark Richardson since 1990. The G.P.S., Guided Placement System was developed over the course of almost two decades of focused career training and coaching. Mark’s expertise came over the course of years and years of direct and indirect experience in Total Talent Management where he captured best practices and learned lessons shaping them into a proven, practical career transition methodology.
He designed and delivered career transition materials for clients and the entire initial coaching staff of a dynamic, start-up firm, Meridian Resources, Inc., beginning in 1990. Mark has certified coaches in Meridian’s career transition coaching system over the years as they completed the comprehensive, extensive training program and demonstrated the required competencies.
To Ron Grant, founder and former President of Meridian Resources who gave Mark the chance to become an expert in the field of career transition training and coaching delivered primarily in a virtual platform and focused on helping white-collar business professionals. Ron, an outstanding business executive, mentor, and life-long friend created a key leadership role in his new innovative HR coaching firm starting in 1990. Mark was convinced to divert his attention from his own consulting business to head up the design and delivery of outplacement programs for corporate-sponsored clients primarily through organizational downsizings.
Ron’s unwavering support and empowering leadership allowed Mark the freedom to innovate and to do what he enjoyed most and did best: Total Talent Management program design delivery to include coaching-the-coaches. So a big thank you to Ron, who by the way is a Jeopardy champion—pretty smart or what?
And since Ron retired in 2016, Mark has been blessed with yet another servant leader in the form of Angie Tinnell. Angie has enthusiastically supported and encouraged Mark to share his experience in a bigger way through G.P.S. - Guided Placement System. So a huge thank you to a great boss
and major advocate of mine.
In closing, Mark’s wonderful, gifted, and beautiful wife Jo has inspired him to go for his wild dreams—no matter. Their love story began through what they were convinced was divine intervention. After all, come on man, what are the odds of a charismatic and classy Philly girl and a good old caring NC boy finding each other, growing with each other and attacking life as a dynamic duo to ensure that the best indeed is yet to be. Just so you know, and perhaps are wondering if God is still in the miracle business, Jo and Mark met in 1996 as outplacement client and career transition coach. Five years later, the Richardson’s created their exciting marriage covenant and cord of three. Bless God for His divine intervention and one of the greatest gifts ever in the form of Mark’s playful, silly, and insightful soulmate. Mark sees his loving partnership with Joey as very special one providing enthusiasm and support as a major source of drive in his finally finishing the first book. Blessings to God and blessings to Jo.
Do you know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. (1 Corinthians 9:24)
Foreword
Have you ever heard the expression, People don’t know what they don’t know
? Simply put, it means most of us are unaware or just not cognizant of things outside our area of knowledge or personal experience. For the most part, we all go happily about our business in this condition and are never any worse for wear. But that’s not always the case.
Take for instance, driving a car. If the operator doesn’t know the difference between the P, D and R symbols on the gearshift, then the driver and all those in the immediate vicinity may be in for a few not-so-pleasant surprises. But since most of us know how to drive, we usually don’t have a minute’s hesitation when getting into a new or different vehicle. We confidently peruse the controls, locate the ignition and gearshift, shift into the proper gear, and go merrily on our way. Have a nice trip!
But alas, it’s not always this way with some other very important life activities. When it comes to planning and carrying out a successful career plan or job search, many folks just can’t seem to get out of the driveway. Others hastily load up and head out with no clear destination in mind, and no usable road map to get them there or anywhere. After all, if you don’t know where you’re going, how will you know when you get there?
After twenty-five years as a professional career coach, I’ve come to the realization that most people don’t even know they need help in this critical area of their life. It’s been more than a little frustrating to hear time and time again how all it really takes is a resume (usually done from an Internet template) and a couple of good job websites to ensure success. Just take that generic vanilla resume and blast it to as many job openings as you can find, then sit back and watch as the lucrative job offers just come rolling into your inbox. Piece of cake, right? Ah, was it but so.
But there is a better way. And it doesn’t have to
