    Chapter 1

    The Denial

    On October 6, 1989, at approximately 1:30 a.m., I was awakened out of my sleep with stabbing chest pains. I couldn’t breathe in or out. I attempted to call 911, but I figured that I would be all right if I drank a glass of baking soda water. After drinking the baking soda water, I felt a little relief, but I didn’t want to wake up my daughter, Keturah, who was only eight years old and sleeping so peacefully during this time. I have always been a strong-minded person, one that believes in fighting the good fight of faith before I take off going to the doctor.

    The Workplace

    Later on that morning, I got up to prepare Keturah for school and myself for work. As I looked in the mirror, I noticed that my face had turned from a light brown to an ash gray. I was nervous, but I played it off. I proceeded to go ahead and finish dressing myself for work. I was a computer specialist / doctor’s assistant for a surgical center right downstairs from where I lived. I worked for a well-known and respected podiatrist in the suburbs of the Midwestern region. As I was still preparing for work, I noticed that my breathing was rather faint. I started walking very slow, and my face was still an ash-gray color. I went downstairs to work, and Keturah boarded the school bus. I loved my job. I was blessed to have a very prestigious position. I wore a white lab coat, and my name was engraved on the front office door along with the owner (Doc) and his assistant surgeon, Dr. Grey. I had my own office, so it was easy for me to go in and hide my face, close my door, and start working without anyone noticing how I
