    Lessons from Katrina

To my family: I have written an autobiography that’s not in chronological order. It’s my pain, hope, and unbelievable life experiences condensed onto pages. As I get older my long-term memory keeps flowing but my short-term memory must work a little harder. I am prompted by the Holy Spirit the urgency to share me now. God has delivered me from too many situations for me not to remind my family and friends that He does still do miracles. I am a walking and talking miracle. Families once shared family experiences with their youth so that history would not be forgotten and how God’s hand in their lives would always be acknowledged. This book is my effort to remind my family why I was always busy, always preoccupied and even away so much. God planted missions in my life that were the first of many. I also want every reader to realize that each time I mention race or ethnic origin, it is meant to emphasize that God allowed me to be the first woman of color to experience many endeavors. Please don’t ever forget the sacrifices of those who went before you. Share their stories and expand your perception of who they were so that you can develop a better life for yourself. Laughter and tears were created by Father God for healing. As you read, let us heal together. God Bless!

    Foreword

1 Thessalonians 5:11, Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do…

Dr. Sheron R. McNickles-Steward, I know her as Mom, is the living definition of this Bible verse not because she must, but rather because God made her to do such. As her eldest son, I’ve been a 1 Thessalonians 5:11 witness to my mother’s life. That has made me a questioner of everything. That includes questioning her. While she has always operated in the psychological and spiritual realm, I started to operate in the common sense and realist realm. I’m not saying that I did not believe in the latter, because I experienced a lot of psychological and spiritual things, because God had her to live it. I use 1 Thessalonians 5:11 to blend reality and common sense in life. It was an escape to the norm after being raised around her.

The following random thoughts my mother will state are not to be viewed as random; but a way to relate to the reader. During combat (Reality) an untrained soldier will shoot wildly and probably will not hit a target. I said probably. The experiences God gives to us may seem random like an unexperienced soldier under pressure. They’re only random because every round shot (Reality experiences) is always MEANT to hit specific targets (The people God meant to see the words of the experienced or aka testimony). Unfortunately, in combat, all it takes is one random round to take out a target. But in the spiritual realm, your physical eyes become the right target and your spirit is the body a testimony can affect.

I know you noticed I stated that, I started to operate in the common sense and realistic realm. What I learned after watching my mother is that 1 Thessalonians 5:11 ties reality, common sense, psychological and the spiritual realm together.

Wherefore: Why, for what reason, because of what? is the definition. Something must happen to someone. One of my mother’s random life experiences will relate to many of you in different ways.

Comfort: The easing or alleviation of a person’s feelings of grief or distress; Knowing one can relate, not matter how different people are brings comfort.

Yourselves together: All of us were born by ourselves, but our experiences bring us together. God does not work in coincidence, but purpose.

Edify one another: To improve (someone) morally or intellectually; Yourselves, together and edify allows testimony to help someone else or yourself in triumph.

Even as also ye do: Your wherefore was not meant just for you to become wiser in life but meant for all.

We like to say the following about today’s generation: They no longer respect or listen to their elders. In Native American culture and foreign cultures, like what I witnessed when I was deployed to Iraq, there are special times of the day when all playtime for children would stop, and everyone would sit around the elders for them to speak. Wherefore were the words that were spoken. The children received comfort and understanding during that time of testimony. Their tribes or community would bond and relate to teach lessons in order that the youth learn from about the past experiences of the elders. This, in turn, edified the life perspectives of their youth and parents.

Dr. Sheron McNickles-Steward has written words of an experienced soldier in God’s spiritual Army. I hope and pray your wherefore can change to comfort after every testimony of my mother’s life, which are random shots to your physical eyes and soul. Everyone has a different experience in life but there is only one of you like I will only have one birth mother. I’m just happy that I have experienced her testimonies through strife and triumph to help edify myself (even as also ye do), children, family, friends, and soldiers.

Life was never meant to be easy, but our testimonies can bring comfort to others. It is especially not easy for those that have been chosen to be put in positions to bring comfort to others, as my mother has. Read each memory and relate it to yourself. If it does not relate right now, the memory of her words on this paper can be shared by you as a testimony for someone else’s comfort. I believe my mother would love that share button just as well, knowing she has influenced someone else to acknowledge God’s work in their lives.

In the midst of this wicked and perverse generation, Dr. Steward comes across as a proverbial voice crying in the wilderness.
