    When I was 12 years old, my father decided to make it his mission to make up with my grandfather. They had been on bad terms for several years, and it had eaten away at him for too long. I didn’t understand why it was a big deal, but I’m now 39 and have a much healthier perspective of why rekindling those relationships becomes so essential. Unfortunately, I hated that that was how I had to spend a week of my summer vacation. I hated school and cherished my free time with my friends outside the classroom. The last thing I wanted to do was spend consecutive days in the middle of nowhere, especially with a grandparent I didn’t know. The whole thing was very frustrating, but I decided to suck it up and cooperate when my dad got teary-eyed while expressing how important the trip was to him. Also, my mother spoke with me in private, encouraging me not only to go with my father but also to pretend I was excited about it.

    My grandpa lived in a small town in Washington State called Winthrop. The drive was nearly six hours from where we lived, and my angsty teenage mind interpreted that as if it were an eternity. Dad must’ve been aware of that, for he checked out a bunch of books on tape from our local library, and I remember thinking that every one of them was something I would’ve been much more interested in than him, which now makes me smile when thinking about it. He was an academic and usually spent his drives listening to National Public Radio and has always seemed to have little tolerance for anything fiction.
