    Ew, what is that!?" my daughter, Madeline, remarked.

    Put it down, Kellen! Anthony commanded.

    But it makes this cool noise! Kellen cheered as he shook the necklace. I immediately recognized the sound. I had first heard it while Quint Campbell, the realtor, was giving us the initial tour of the house. Although I couldn’t establish where it was coming from, I had decided that it sounded like seashells clacking against one another. Now I had learned that it wasn’t seashells; it was a collection of human teeth that were strung around what appeared to be a necklace. Many of the teeth were old and rotted, but a few of them seemed to be much newer, still holding onto remnants of dried blood. My grim feelings accelerated as I remembered I had also heard the noise while I was in the kitchen with Marcus Davenport, my recent affair. Why on earth would I have heard that noise from inside the home?

    Drop it! I shouted at my son, not being able to handle the sound anymore. He did as he was told but then immediately started crying. In no way was he accustomed to me yelling at him like that. Feeling sympathetic, Anthony quickly scooped up his son and tried to soothe him.

    There, there, he said, it’s okay, pal, it’s okay.

    Without touching the object, I continued to examine it. The longer I looked at it, the more disgusting it seemed. I was convinced I could even see tiny fragments of gum tissue attached to one of whiter teeth. Madeline refused to go anywhere near it. Mommy, get it away! she pleaded.
