    Wendigo Woods - Tom Lyons

    Chapter 1

Ihad to rub my eyes to make sure I saw correctly. Mitch’s body was levitating just above the rug in front of the bed. He appeared to be sleeping. Zoe was kneeling before him, muttering something that was barely louder than a whisper. It was right then that I knew I was right not to trust her in the first place. No wonder I had grilled Anthony for doing so. Not only was she young and hot—she was also some kind of sorceress.

Get the hell away from him! I yelled at the Zoe as I darted toward her. Startled, she whipped her head around and looked at me, revealing a pair of black, soulless-looking eyes. It looked as though the devil himself had possessed her. I was terrified, but I had too much momentum to stop. I ended up tackling her, which immediately caused my father in law’s body to fall to the floor. There was a loud thud as the back of his noggin hit the antique hardwood.

It all happened so fast that I found myself on top of Zoe with my hands around her neck. As she gasped for air, I continued to strangle her.

What have you done to my home!? I screamed. What have you done to my home!?

Stop this! Mitch yelled with a weak voice as he scraped his aching body off the ground behind me. It wasn’t long before I felt him grab onto my shoulders so that he could pull me off of Zoe. He succeeded, but when I stood up and shoved him away, I noticed his eyes were black, just like those of our housekeeper.

Stay the hell away from me and my kids! I yelled at the two of them as Zoe began picking herself up off the floor. At that moment, all I could think about was getting back to my children so that I could keep an eye on them.

After I made it back into the main house, I ran up the steps and opened the door to my daughter’s bedroom. She was on the floor, leaning against her bed and reading one of her novels.

What’s wrong? she asked. She could see that I was sweating and that my heart was racing.

Come with me to the car, my dear, I said, trying to sound calm while simultaneously feeling I had no time to explain anything.

    What? Why? Madeline said.

    Just COME! I commanded.

She didn’t argue; instead, she got up and followed me over to Kellen’s room. It was before we made it down the hallway to my son’s bedroom that I could hear the weeping coming from inside.

Kellen!? I murmured as I picked up the pace and ran toward the door. It was right after I grabbed the doorknob and began pushing the wooden door open that it was slammed in my face. My son continued to cry from within.

As I fought with all of my strength to get inside the room, it was clear that someone or something wanted to prevent me from doing so.

    Kellen!?

Both my daughter and I began to scream for my husband, but there was no response.

Get away! Get away! Kellen repeated desperately from inside the room. Finally, I managed to push my way inside. I ran over to my son and picked him up off the floor. His face and arms were riddled with lacerations.

Oh my god, what happened!? I said, but he just continued sobbing as he burrowed his head into my shoulder. I grabbed onto Madeline’s fingers with my free hand, and we rushed toward the staircase that led down into the foyer.

Anthony!? Anthony!? I shouted the whole way, but there was still no response. I wondered if that little devil, Zoe, had gotten to him first. I was so relieved when I saw that the car keys were in their rightful spot near
