When the Tree Walks

One morning as I was sitting beside Grandpa on the porch steps, I noticed a vine nearby. As we sat there in the gentle sun winter in North India, I saw tendrils moving slowly toward Grandfather. Twenty minutes later, it had crossed the steps and touched his feet.

There may be a scientific explanation for the plant's behavior – perhaps it has something to do with light and warmth – but I like to think that it moved across the stairs simply because it wanted to be near Grandpa. Someone always felt like wanting to be close to him. Sometimes when I sat alone under the tree, I felt a bit lonely, but once Grandpa joined me, the garden became a happy place.

Grandfather had served many years in the Indian Forest Service and it was only natural that he knew trees and liked them. In retirement, he built a bungalow on the outskirts of Dehradun, planting trees all around.

Lime, mango, orange and guava, as well as eucalyptus, jacaranda and Persian lilac. In the fertile Doon Valley, plants and trees grow tall and strong.

There were other trees in the compound before the house was built, including an old peepul which broke through the walls of an abandoned outhouse, knocking out bricks with its vigorous growth.

The peepal tree is a great show. Even when there's not the slightest breeze, its broad-chested, slim-waisted leaves swirl like a top determined to grab your attention and invite you into the shade.

Grandma wanted the peepal tree to be cut down but Grandpa said, 'Never mind, we can always build another latrine.'

Grandma didn't mind trees, but she preferred growing flowers and constantly ordered catalogs and seeds.

Grandpa helped her with the garden not because she was crazy about flower gardens but because she loved watching butterflies and 'there is only one way
