The lonely Christmas tree
Lets begin this story about 1000 years ago up in the rocky mountains of North America, well to be exact in a small town called Granby not too far from the Rocky Mountains, although back then the town didn’t exist, or the airport or the cemetery, but to make things simple this IS where it all started. In amongst a group of tall fir trees lived a family of Squirrels, and these squirrels would save all the nuts and seeds they could, to see them through the winter, now this particular year, the squirrels had been arguing, mainly about nuts, and too cut a long story short one of the furry mammals got fed up and decided to take his seeds and nuts and move. So that night the little squirrel gathered up his belongings and left the safety of the Fir trees and slowly headed north. It took him about four days to finally get to a new group of trees that he decided would make a good home. It was what occurred on the way that this bit of the story is really about. You see a short way into his journey, after climbing hills, jumping small streams, going around a lake and trying to avoid being eaten, the Squirrel stopped to sleep. Under a rock. In a small valley. Pretty much hidden from the rest of the world. And that’s when it happened, the Squirrel had a bad dream, I don’t know what about, you can make that bit up for yourself, and when he woke with a start he accidentally knocked over his small bag of seeds and nuts, and out they all poured. The squirrel cursed his bad luck, gathered up his spilled belongings and carried on his journey. But he hadn’t picked up everything. One small seed had been missed; it had rolled out from under the rock and had lodged itself in a small crack. And there it sat and waited, for some rain, a bit of sun and a lot of luck. And in time the seed grew and grew and grew…Now some things happen for a reason and this was one of those reason happening things. Of course the tree didn’t know any of this was happening but at some point in its very long life it would be the bravest tree that ever grew.
