MOM SETTLED herself in the corner of the couch with Dad beside her. The family was scattered around the living room, surrounded by torn wrapping paper and boxes. As usual, my brother, Rick, had put himself in charge of passing out the presents. Nobody did Christmas like Rick. And I was not at my best with the worries that consumed me this year. “Would you like a blanket, Mom?” I asked. “Something warm to drink?”
“I’m fine,” Mom said. “Thank you.”
