Wild Fruit
Walk far to school. Down the hill, past the rhododendron trees, across the creek, around the brown bare hill, then past the narrow little market, past the fruit stalls piled high with oranges, guavas, bananas and apples.
The boy's gaze often lingered on the piles of golden oranges—oranges that grew on the plains, now braving the pale winter sun on the hills. His nose twitched from the pungent smell of summer melon; his fingers now and then brushed gently against the skin of the peaches. But this is the forbidden fruit. The boys have no money for them.
He had one meal at seven in the morning when he left the house; the other at seven in the evening when he returned from school.
There are times — especially when he's at school, and his teacher rambles on, lecturing on honesty, courage, duty, and self-sacrifice — when he gets really hungry; but on the way to school, or on the way home, there is almost always the prospect of wild fruit.
The boy's name was Vijay, and he came from a village near Mussoorie. His parents cultivated several narrow terraces on the hillside.
They grow potatoes, onions, barley, corn; barely enough to feed themselves. When the vegetables were scarce, they boiled the nettle tops and made it into a dish resembling spinach.
Vijay's parents realized the importance of educating him, and it didn't cost much, except books. But it's four miles to town, and a long walk makes a boy hungry.
But there are almost always wild berries. The purple berry of the thorny bilberry bush, ripens in May and June. Wild strawberries, growing in the shade like bloodstains on the dark green seasonal grass.
Cherries, tart and hard medlar. Vijay's strong teeth and probing tongue bring out whatever smell or sweetness is hidden inside. And in March the rhododendrons bloom.
