    Good Kids

    Wild Fruit

Walk far to school. Down the hill, past the rhododendron trees, across the creek, around the brown bare hill, then past the narrow little market, past the fruit stalls piled high with oranges, guavas, bananas and apples.

The boy's gaze often lingered on the piles of golden oranges—oranges that grew on the plains, now braving the pale winter sun on the hills. Cherries, tart and hard medlar. Vijay's strong teeth and probing tongue bring out whatever smell or sweetness is hidden inside. And in March the rhododendrons bloom.
