Special Agent Sugar
Sugar was no ordinary cat. Although he looked like a normal cat, white with a little brown on his face, he had an amazing ability. The only time Sugar meowed was when a thief was nearby.
Sugar lived in a hot desert town called Alice Springs located in the center of Australia. When he was a little kitten, he was found by an old lady named Ruby. He was thin and walked the streets silently. Ruby had a small flower shop called Desert Roses
. Ruby brought Sugar home to live with her in the flower shop. Ruby slept in her tiny bedroom above her shop. Sugar loved to sleep downstairs with the colorful flowers. Ruby fed Sugar often. She didn’t want Sugar to be thin and sick. Every day, she gave him fish and milk. Eventually, Sugar became healthy and loved living with old Ruby in the flower shop home. Ruby loved being with her best friend, Sugar. Ruby didn’t have a family, so Sugar was like her little son.
As time went on, Ruby noticed that Sugar never meowed. Even after a year, never once did a little sound come out of Sugar’s mouth. Ruby was confused as to why Sugar didn’t meow, but she didn’t worry about it too much.
One day, as some people came into Ruby’s shop to look at flowers, Sugar let out a loud angry meow! This was the first time Ruby heard Sugar meow. Ruby ran over to the front window where Sugar was and looked out. Someone was running away with a bunch of flowers without paying for them! Ruby opened the door and shouted, Thief! Thief! Thief! Somebody, catch him!
A big strong man nearby heard Ruby’s cry for help. The strong man saw the thief running away. Suddenly, the strong man ran after him. The strong man tackled the thief to the ground. Ruby called the police. In less than a minute, a police car pulled up and took the thief away. Good boy Sugar! Now I know you only meow at thieves!
said Ruby.
A few months later, Ruby heard Sugar meow again. This time Sugar was outside the flower shop looking at the neighbor’s candy store. The owner of the shop was Mr. Grace. Ruby looked out and saw three boys running with their hands full of candy bars. Mr. Grace! Thieves!
shouted Ruby. Because Mr. Grace was young and exercised often, he easily caught the thieves. Ruby called the police. The same police officers who came for the flower thief a few months before, arrived on scene. Alice Springs is seeing a lot of robberies lately. Our police officers have caught twenty-seven thieves this month alone. Our town is lucky to have Sugar around,
said the police officer. Yes, Sugar is a great cat. He always knows when a thief takes something. He only meows when a robbery is taking place,
said Ruby as she poured Sugar a bowl of milk. Ruby, the other shop owners, the police, and all the townspeople of Alice Springs were very grateful to have Sugar around.
One night, after Ruby closed up her shop and had dinner with Sugar, she went upstairs and fell asleep in her bed. As usual, Sugar curled up near the flowers in the shop downstairs. Ruby was sleeping well and was having a nice dream until she heard something that woke her up. She looked at the clock on her bedroom wall. It was exactly midnight. She heard the loud sound again. Meow! Meow! Meow!
roared Sugar. Ruby looked out her upstairs bedroom window. On the street below, she saw something terrible. Two young men dressed in all black were pulling on a lady’s purse. The lady was fighting back. She was hitting their heads with the umbrella she had in her hand. Ouch! Ouch! Stop it and give me your purse!
said one of the thieves. Never! I am poor and I need this money to buy food for my family!
shouted the lady as she continued to hit the thieves with her umbrella. Ruby called the police right away. The police arrived in their police car quicker than lightning. The police car’s siren was wailing and the whole street was lit up in flashing red and blue lights. Hands up! Get down on the ground!
one of the officers said using a loudspeaker. The thieves hesitated at first, but the lady with the umbrella gave one last strong blow to each of the thieves. The umbrella hit them so hard that the thieves were too dizzy to continue their evil plan. The police ran over to the thieves, handcuffed them, and put them in the back of the police car. This is amazing; Sugar helped catch more thieves!
said Ruby. Sugar is a real hero. He only makes a sound when help is needed. He uses his voice for good. No cat on earth is more helpful than Sugar!
said the police officer. The lady with the purse knelt down and said, Thank you, Sugar. If you didn’t meow, those evil thieves would have taken all my money! Because you were helpful, I still have money to buy food for my family.
Sugar became famous throughout all of Australia. The Alice Springs chief of police even gave him a golden milk bowl with Special Agent Sugar
engraved on it.
Even though Sugar was Australia’s most famous cat, he was content with his simple life at the flower shop. All he wanted was to catch thieves and be near Ruby. Sugar never forgot the day Ruby rescued him when he was a sick little kitten on the street. Sugar loved Ruby more than anything.
The End
What is Love?
Once there lived a small girl named Jennifer. She lived in a small town in Canada. Jennifer had light skin with a face full of freckles and light brown hair. Because she was so light-skinned, she got sunburnt easily.
She spent most weekends walking her dog through the small town. It was Autumn and the sun was still burning hot during mid-day. Because she was so light skinned, she would get a sunburn very quickly. Her solution to this problem was to always take an umbrella with her while walking her beloved dog, Jacob. When the sun popped out, her umbrella popped open. Even her little pooch enjoyed the cool shade created by her umbrella. They could walk for hours and hours thanks to her large, strong, tri-colored umbrella (pink, white, and blue.)
But on the weekdays, Jennifer had to go to school. She walked to school with her precious pup, Jacob, and her umbrella. Jacob could not go inside Jennifer’s school. A sign on the gate said, No Pets Inside the School!
, so little Jacob just laid down at the gate with his eyes open and his pointy ears raised up in the air. He was always patient when waiting for Jennifer on the hard, rocky cement.
While Jennifer was inside school, she was eager for the bell to ring so she could go home. But before the bell rang, Jennifer’s teacher, Miss Brady, gave a homework assignment. Students, listen carefully! It is time for me to give you your homework. Here it is.
Miss Brady passed out the homework paper. Jennifer took a look. There wasn’t much written on it. There was just one question! The homework question was, What is love?
Jennifer looked at her paper. She thought for a moment. Even though it was just one question, she wasn’t sure what to write! She thought and thought, but still couldn’t think of a good answer. After the bell rang, Jennifer put the homework paper in her backpack and ran towards the gate where little Jacob was waiting on the hard, rough, sharp cement. His little tail starts wagging quickly. He jumped up and greeted Jennifer. The two began to walk home after Jennifer popped open her umbrella.
On the way home, Jennifer saw that Jacob was thirsty. She opened her water bottle and looked in. There was just a little bit of water left. Jennifer was thirsty too, but Jennifer poured all the water she had into a little dish! Jacob drank it all. As she was closing her water bottle, Jennifer started to think about her homework question, What is love?
She still couldn’t think of a good answer. They continued walking through the pretty little town full of flowers and butterflies.
As they were walking, Jennifer tripped on the sidewalk, fell down, and injured her arm. It was red and bruised! It hurts! She couldn’t keep her backpack on because of the pain. She set her backpack down and suddenly little Jacob had a clever idea! He put his teeth on the handle and started to pull the backpack! Jennifer was so happy that Jacob could pull her backpack home so she didn’t have to carry it with her injured arm. It was not easy for Jacob to pull the bag because he was so small, but he saw how much Jennifer hurt. He really wanted to help her.
Finally, Jennifer made it home and told her mom and dad all about her trip which started at school. She told her parents how little Jacob was waiting for her after school on the hard, hot cement. She told her parents that she gave all her water to Jacob because he was thirsty. She also told them that she injured her arm and that little Jacob pulled her backpack the whole way home even though it hurt his mouth and teeth.
Jennifer’s parents gave her a big hug and Jacob a little treat. They were so happy she was safe. She went inside her home, got a glass of water, and sat down on her sofa with Jacob and her backpack. She opened her backpack and got out her homework. She once again read the question Miss Brady gave her, What is love?
Suddenly, Jennifer thought she had a great answer to that question! She remembered how little Jacob was waiting for her on the hot, rough cement after school. Even though it was painful for Jacob to wait there, Jacob really wanted to be near Jennifer and walk back home with her. Jennifer remembered how she gave all her water to Jacob even though she was very thirsty too. She remembered how Jacob helped pull her backpack home after she got hurt. It was not easy for Jacob to pull that backpack so far with his teeth, but he didn’t complain that his mouth and teeth hurt. He just wanted Jennifer to be able to get home safely.
Jennifer put her homework paper on the table and began to write her answer. Little Jacob sat next to her wagging his tail. This is what she wrote for the answer to her homework question, What is love?
Love is when you help others because you don’t want them to hurt and be sad. Love is when you do something that may not be comfortable for you, but your actions help someone else. Love is when you think about others more than yourself.
