Chapter 1
Monkey
In a town in the south of Spain lived a very rich man, very wealthy, who lived surrounded by all the luxury and comfort one can imagine. His business allowed him to indulge in many whims, such as a house surrounded by gardens and servants who bowed to him at all hours. He owned horses, precious works of art, and his table was always filled with delicacies and exotic fruits from the most remote places in the world.
Of all the possessions he owned, there was one that he especially loved: a very cute monkey that a friend had brought him from Africa. Since he was single and not busy, he dedicated himself to taking care of her and playing with her all day. He had so doted on her that he made her sit at table with him, untangle her hair with an ivory comb, and let her sleep by the fireplace on silk cushions. The queen herself lived no better!
As if that were not enough, the little monkey was very presumptuous, which is why the teacher used to give her brooches, bows and all kinds of decorations to make her feel like the most beautiful in the world.
The story goes that one summer day she went shopping and appeared at home wearing an ideal dress. It was made of brightly colored fabrics and had two stunning lace ruffles. The monkey got excited and ran to see himself in the mirror.
- Oh, it's incredible, but how pretty I am!
The very flirtatious woman put a blue felt hat on her head and looked so, so elegant that she thought everyone should see her. So she, without thinking about the consequences of it, she made a crazy decision: to escape through the window that same night and cross the Strait of Gibraltar to reach Africa. Her destination was Tetouan, the land where she was born and where her childhood friends and family still lived.
As he walked away from his comfortable life, only one thought floated:
- I want everyone I meet to see how beautiful and elegant I am! I will get thousands of compliments and I will be the envy of all!
It is not really known how he did it, but the truth is that at dawn the monkey appeared by surprise in front of all his companions. As she had imagined, they yawned around her and she strutted back and forth like a peacock. Monkeys of all ages began to clap and exclaim in admiration.
- Oh, how beautiful!
- What a beautiful dress! It must be very expensive!
- What I wish! ... We are naked and she is wearing an outfit fit for a princess!
The proud monkey was delighted with the welcome. He noticed that he had caused a sensation for her and that they talked about her as if she were someone really important. Hearing continuous compliments gave her so much pleasure! ...
- It must be a very famous monkey in Spain, because these clothes are not worn by anyone.
- Yes, of course... How beautiful and how fun it is to walk!
- He also seems to be very smart! He may be the president of Spain and we unknowingly!
The fascination she exerted on everyone was evident, since even the men of the clan could not resist her charms either. In fact, one of them, the oldest and wisest monkey, had an idea that he wanted to share with the others. He climbed on a rock and raised his voice.
- As you know, today we are honored to welcome an exceptional member of the community who, as far as we can tell, has come a long way in life. Tomorrow we will all leave for the south of the continent and I propose that our illustrious guest lead the expedition.
The applause was unanimous! What a good idea! No one could think of a better candidate to lead them on such a long and perilous journey.
At dawn, all the families of monkeys with their babies on their backs began a long walk with the cute pizpireta in front. Of course, she was delighted to be the protagonist and she took them where she saw fit: through forests, valleys, deserts, rivers and muddy swamps, but all she managed was to get lost. Her sense of direction was zero and she had no idea how to lead the group to her destination.
What was supposed to be a journey of a few hours turned into a horrendous journey of a week. The poor animals wandered from one place to another for days without food, without water and with bruises all over their bodies. When they finally arrived in South Africa, the families were exhausted and felt that they had not miraculously lost their lives.
The old monkey, as the leader that he was, returned to address the herd.
- Getting here almost cost us a disappointment! We were deceived by the beauty and elegance of this monkey more than the experience of it. We took it for granted that because he was a distinguished ape, he was also an intelligent ape. From all this we must learn a lesson: appearances can be deceiving and in the end you always discover what you really are.
The embarrassed monkey took off his luxurious clothes and admitted his ignorance. It wasn't to look better and wear expensive clothes that she stopped being pretty like everyone else. From that day on, she humbly joined the group and returned to her rightful life with her family.
Moral: each person is as they
