Backyard Horror Book Three - Elaine Brown
Prologue
Afew weeks later, Joey and I settled back into just being ourselves, after the incident with that dead creature buried in the woods. The area, where it came from, had been cleared and a house was being built near that very spot.
Joey and I felt sorry for the family that would eventually live there. But, hey, that thing was their problem, if it was still lurking around. We had no intention of going near that place to warn them! Besides, would they believe us?
We told Mom about it, and she said, You’re wasting your breath, to talk about something that is unexplainable; otherwise, they’ll think you’re nuts! Besides, it’s not coming back; at least, not on our doorstep. So, there’s no need for all this worrying!
Joey and I believed what Mom told us, as long as we stayed away from that area, which we did. We had no intention of ever going back there and that continued even when school had ended for the year. I was looking forward to the summer months to relax and give my brain a break from studying for those final exams and pass them with flying colors. Officially, in the Fall, I would enter the school year as a senior!
Unfortunately, my dream for having a peaceful summer had ended on a Friday afternoon, only a week after the school year had ended.
Say...What?
Trouble started, when Lila and Shirley, two girls in my neighborhood, knocked on the backdoor wanting to speak with me. Both of them seemed so friendly, and eager to have a conversation me, especially since we hadn’t hung out with each other since summer camp, and that was a few years ago.
Every now and then, I’d see them riding their bikes or run into them at a department store, and they’d start up a conversation, usually inviting me to come over, so we could talk some more. I’d always declined, coming up with a reason ‘why’ I couldn’t, and that’s because, Lila and Shirley gave me the creeps! I couldn’t understand ‘why’ they were always together, since they weren’t related, and didn’t live in the same household.
So, when they came knocking on the door, which was an unusual move on their part, I needed to come up with a reason to keep the conversation short and sweet, so they’d leave.
Hi!
they both said together, sounding like puppets.
Hi!
I repeated, stepping out on the porch, while closing the screen door behind me.
We have something very important to speak with you about,
said Shirley, while Lila nodded, sitting down on the porch steps. Shirley joined her, while I got off the porch to stand in front of them.
Shirley did all the talking, while Lila simply sat bobbing her head up and down, like one of those, bobble headed toys. You’re not going to believe this, but we saw a little girl getting abducted by some men-in-white, and we need your help in rescuing her.
At first, I just stared at them, while they stared back. So, I figured I’d better say something, instead of keeping my mouth open for flies to find a new home. Where?
as if, I didn’t know.
In the orange grove,
replied Shirley. We saw her when we decided to investigate where those noises were coming from last night.
You went into the orange grove at night?
I asked, quite surprised Shirley and Lila had a brave streak in them.
"Yeah, well, to tell you the truth, Sissy, we didn’t know some men-in-white had built an underground base and maybe capturing abductees, like that little
