Backyard Horror Book One - Elaine Brown
Prologue
I should’ve listened to my baby brother, Joey, when he told me about finding some old wallet, because that’s when all the trouble really started! You see, Joey was out riding his bike, supposedly minding his own business, when the chain popped off, right by a vacant, wooded lot. So, he had to stop and fix it. As he was doing so, he spotted something shiny. It was a quarter. Joey picked it up, stuck it inside his pants’ pocket, and noticed another one, only a few feet away. As my brother bent down to pick that one up, he noticed a whole trail of them leading into this wooded area.
Well, I didn't blame him at all for wanting to fill his pockets, since money had been rather sparse at home, and that's because Momma and Daddy were saving up to do some renovation. For starters, there were only two bedrooms and one bathroom in our home. Joey and I had to share a bedroom, while Momma and Daddy had use part of their bedroom as an office.
Often, Joey and I refer to Momma's and Daddy's bedroom as the office, because, lately, it looked more like an office. There were several file cabinets and a desk. They slept on a sofa bed, which looked more like a couch, than a bed. Well, it was obvious, we needed an extra bedroom, as well as another room to use as an office. So, since money was tight, Joey was on cloud 9 picking up every coin he could find, which led him to an old wallet sticking up out of the ground.
Of course, my little brother took it, and since there weren’t any other coins left, Joey headed back to where he’d left his bike. As soon as he stepped back onto the road, the wallet in his hand, simply disappeared! Immediately, he felt for the coins, and realized...his pocket was empty!
Before Joey rode away, he could swear he heard someone laughing, inside those woods. Turning his head, he glanced in that direction and thought he saw a shadow of some sort. Joey took off, like the wind, and didn’t stop, until he reached home.
Help Me, PLEASE!
It was Spring Break, and Joey and I decided to offer our services, mowing lawns. Hey, we needed the cash. I needed some new clothes and so did Joey. We spend several days mowing and trimming hedges, and felt we had earned enough money, and so we stopped doing it.
Us, having a new Spring wardrobe to wear to school, might stop some of the teasing we'd experienced, of and on, throughout the school year from the 'glitter posse.' It would be so nice to end the rest of the school year wearing a smile on our faces.
Since we were itching to spend our hard earn money, we begged Momma to drive us to one of the few clothing stores our town had to offer. On that day, Momma decided to take a different route, since she'd recently got a traffic ticket for speeding, and that's because she drove an old clunker.
The car’s speedometer worked, only when you
