About this ebook
Get the Summary of Erica Dhawan's Digital Body Language in 20 minutes. Please note: This is a summary & not the original book. Original book introduction: Humans rely on body language to connect and build trust, but with most of our communication happening from behind a screen, traditional body language signals are no longer visible -- or are they? In Digital Body Language, Erica Dhawan, a go-to thought leader on collaboration and a passionate communication junkie, combines cutting edge research with engaging storytelling to decode the new signals and cues that have replaced traditional body language across genders, generations, and culture. In real life, we lean in, uncross our arms, smile, nod and make eye contact to show we listen and care. Online, reading carefully is the new listening. Writing clearly is the new empathy. And a phone or video call is worth a thousand emails.
Digital Body Language will turn your daily misunderstandings into a set of collectively understood laws that foster connection, no matter the distance. Dhawan investigates a wide array of exchanges―from large conferences and video meetings to daily emails, texts, IMs, and conference calls―and offers insights and solutions to build trust and clarity to anyone in our ever changing world.

About the Author
Overview
In Digital Body Language (2021), entrepreneur and keynote speaker Erica Dhawan highlights the subtle cues and signals that we unconsciously give while communicating digitally. Anxiety and misunderstandings can arise when we send the wrong signals with our written communications, or misinterpret other people’s signals. By upgrading traditional rules for body language into a modern, digital format, Erica offers practical advice for clear communication between diverse teams of different genders, generations, and cultures in the digital workplace.
A New Language
Humans convey empathy via body language, and we communicate more successfully when we consider the body language of our audience. However, digital communication has made once-clear cues almost unintelligible because the tone of written communication differs from that of spoken communication. Empathy in the workplace now requires a new body language.
Roughly 70 percent of team communications are virtual, and the average person spends nearly two hours daily on social media. However, according to the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, 50 percent of the time, the tone of our emails is misinterpreted. This disengagement happens because people don’t know how to be empathetic without the nonverbal cues that make up 60-80 percent of face-to-face communication. This leads to deep distrust and animosity.
