    Preface

    In the early eighties, I was working for a multinational in Mumbai. We had a huge sales force and our boss was an American with large ideas and an accent difficult for us to understand sometimes. The person in charge of purchase and procurement was an impatient man. He would rarely listen to what the other person said.

    One day, the boss wanted 100 braziers to be given as gifts to his best sales agents. He called up the purchase guy on the phone and asked him to get 100 numbers of braziers.

    The purchase guy was, as usual, in a hurry. He heard but did not listen. He ordered 100 brassieres.

    You can imagine what happened when the sales agents were presented with a bra as an incentive to perform.

    The last I heard, the purchase guy was in the despatch section even now, licking stamps to be fixed on envelopes.

    Why did this level of stupidity occur and does it occur regularly?

    There are two basic aspects of communication that were missing in this incident. The boss said but did not check or ensure it was understood. The purchase guy heard but did not listen and understand. Unfortunately, this happens regularly in life.

    As we move more and more into the digital age, the need for proper communication increases. This book is a small attempt to distil my experience of communication over the last four decades in a simple and structured manner so that everyone finds it useful.
