About this ebook
Jews have lived in Hamburg for over 400 years. Even today, numerous places in the cityscape are reminiscent of its checkered history, which ended with National Socialism. Those who were able to flee in time and found a new home scattered across the globe have never forgotten Hamburg – nor have they forgotten the old recipes their families used to cook and bake. They passed them on to their descendants: the recipe for the butter cake with its unforgettable taste or the sweet and sour red fruit jelly, for traditional Jewish recipes such as chicken soup with matzah dumplings or chopped liver...Today there is Jewish life again in Hamburg. Jews from a wide variety of countries are once again settling in the Hanseatic city and cooking dishes from their countries of origin: Persian herb omelets, Russian borscht, Aargau carrot cake... The »Jewish Cookbook from Hamburg« has collected all these recipes and enriched them with anecdotes and biographies. The result is a traditional and at the same time modern multicultural »cookbook«.
