    ABOUT NELSON MANDELA

    Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid campaigner and the country's first president from 1994 to 1999 (18 July 1918 - 5 December 2013). He was the first completely representative democratic election to elect a black head of state in the history of the nation. His administration concentrated on promoting racial harmony in order to erase the effects of apartheid. He presided over the African National Congress (ANC) party from 1991 to 1997 and was an ideological socialist and African nationalist.

    Mandela, a Xhosa, was born in Mvezo, Union of South Africa, into the Thembu royal line. Prior to practicing law in Johannesburg, he studied law at the Universities of Fort Hare and Witwatersrand. His involvement in anti-colonial and African nationalist politics there led to his 1943 ANC membership and 1944 co-founding of the ANC Youth League. Mandela and the ANC dedicated themselves to its overthrow once apartheid, a system of racial segregation that gave whites preference, was created by the National Party's white-only government. He was chosen to lead the Transvaal chapter of the ANC, gaining notoriety as a result of his participation in the 1955 Congress of the People and the 1952 Defiance Campaign. He was often detained for seditious behavior, and he was tried for treason in 1956 but was not successful. He covertly joined the outlawed South African Communist Party after being influenced by Marxism (SACP). Although initially dedicated to nonviolent protest, he co-founded the militant uMkhonto we Sizwe in 1961 and oversaw a campaign of
