    ABOUT ALAN WATTS

Alan Wilson Watts, an English writer, lecturer, and self-described philosophical entertainer, was most known for translating and popularizing Eastern philosophical traditions such as Buddhism, Taoism, and Hinduism for a Western audience. He lived from January 6, 1915, to November 16, 1973. He immigrated to the United States in 1938 and started his Zen training in New York after being born in Chislehurst, England. He graduated from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary with a master's in theology, and in 1945 he was ordained as an Episcopal priest. In 1950, he quit the ministry and relocated to California, where he joined the American Academy of Asian Studies faculty.

While serving as a volunteer programmer at Berkeley's KPFA radio station, Watts developed a following. He authored more than 25 books and essays on philosophy and religion, including The Way of Zen (1957), one of the earliest bestsellers on Buddhism, which he used to introduce the hippie subculture. In Psychotherapy East and West (1961), he stated that psychotherapy may be compared to Buddhism. He regarded Nature, Man and Woman (1958) as his best work overall, from a literary point of view. He also investigated psychedelics and human consciousness in writings like The New Alchemy (1958) and The Joyous Cosmology (1962).

Regular airings on public radio, particularly in California and New York, as well as more recently online on platforms like YouTube and Spotify, helped Watts' lectures gain notoriety after his passing. The majority of his audio speeches were captured between the 1960s and the early 1970s.
