A man of courage

DR FAROOq MEER

Dr Farooq Meer died on Saturday, at the age of 85.

He was at home, surrounded by his close family and loved ones.

The name Farooq Meer will ring a bell for those who followed anti-apartheid politics from the 1970s to the 1990s. Often acting as spokesperson for the Natal Indian Congress (NIC) and the forces ranged against the government-imposed South African Indian Council and House of Delegates, Meer was at the heart of anti-apartheid resistance.

Many came to respect him not only because of his activism, but because of how he lived his post-apartheid life. He did not seek to “cash in” on his Struggle credentials and was not afraid to voice his disappointment with the trajectory of the country.
