    Chapter One

Underneath the full moon, dragons gathered on the highest plateau in the continent. No mortal could reach them, and even clouds hung low on either side, leaving the stars and moon uncovered to shine down upon the festivities. Despite that, large bonfires roared. Wooden structures sculpted from the thick trunks of trees and their twisted branches blazed, and when the fires dimmed, any of the hundreds of dragons leaned over, breathing out a fiery breath to light them once more.

Some of the dragons wandered about in their humanoid forms. Many modeled their appearances off the fae. Pointed ears and angular features matched the sharp edges of their once scaled forms, but Radek never believed such a delicate visage suited him. Unlike most on this continent, he preferred to look purely human. The rounded ears hid beneath the tangles of his auburn hair, and he wove diamonds like tiny stars into his hair. All dragons — in humanoid forms or not — wore their best. They showed off their wealth upon their persons, seeking to enchant a mate or simply model their success.

No matter where Radek looked, another bright chain of gold or cloak of gemstones caught his eye. Having been born on another continent, none of these dragons knew him, and from the way they turned up their noses at his human form, they weren’t impressed by his first public appearance since he claimed the southwestern-most mountain range.

Hello, he greeted, nodding at the eyes which tracked him, but they whispered and muttered behind hands and wings.

That’s the one, one of them whispered.

Another squinted at him as if he were an insect in need of closer inspection. Thought he’d be a bit more impressive.

    Poor Julian. Any other year…

Whoever this Julian was, they drew a ridiculous amount of concern from the rest of the dragons, but they could not be connected to Radek. Obviously, it was a case of mistaken identity, so to help them see they were mistaken, Radek transformed into his dragon form. Larger than most of the others, his wings stretched strong and wide. His crimson scales shimmered in the fire’s light. The sharp spikes at the end of his tail had been tipped in gold as had his claws, and the black of his underbelly displayed a studding of diamonds. Gasps broke out. They oohed and ahhed, watching the way his accessories sparkled. Much more the reaction Radek desired.

Preening, he flew above the crowd, joining the dozen or so who danced about, gliding in wide loops to display his agility. Weaving through the air, he observed the dragons below. That shut them up. Good.

He was larger than most of the dragons on this new continent. They prided themselves in their jewels the same as any, but the dragons here played at being delicate, and it failed to suit the bulk of them. Perhaps they enjoyed being underestimated. Given fair warning, Radek bet he could take any of them or a half dozen at once. Though he came almost five months ago, he had not met a single dragon before that night, but the rules came simple enough. Introductions on blood-less grounds were always important. Nobody could kill another on the plateau. Even if he accidentally offended someone, they had to give him a bit of extra consideration and a chance to make it up to them here while they had no such need outside the plateau.

As he looped high, Radek avoided the dragons who drew close, trying to flirt with him. Swinging upside down, the crimson dragon caught sight of the most beautiful man he had ever seen. Where the angular sharpness which the dragons of this continent seemed to prefer often looked too delicate to Radek’s eyes, this man looked ethereal as if he were an angel descended to torment all virile dragons. Silky black hair and eyes like two chips of obsidian set in a tan face. Lithe and tall, he stood beside a group of older dragons in various forms, and while those around him draped themselves in pieces of their hoards, he wore simple garments — all as dark as his eyes, and his boots showed off the slim slope of his calves into his delicate ankles.

Immediately, Radek recognized this gorgeous stranger as his fated mate. Nothing else could explain the way his heart skipped a beat, or the desperate urge to collect his entire hoard and present it to the other. Hopeful and yearing, he glided through the air, trying to catch the other’s eye, but for the simplicity of the gorgeous black dragon’s dressing, other dragons fell over themselves with offers of jewels and weapons. He took extra time to review the spears; otherwise, the black dragon dismissed the would-be suitors without a second glance.

...keeps refusing everyone! Radek overheard one rejected suitor grumble.

Another pouted, taking to the sky. I know he’s out of my league, but I had to take a chance.

None of them were doing it right. They failed to understand the true depth of what this man deserved.

Teleporting away through a ring of fire, Radek dove into the depths of his cavernous home. He had picked the mountains for the rare stones beneath them, and gathering the black opals which shimmered with their rainbow flecks, he returned to the plateau with his arms full of the stones which he had spent his first months in the range polishing to perfection. Still in his dragon form with his red scales gleaming and the diamonds sparkling on his chest, Radek poured the black opals down at the beautiful man’s feet. The pile rose higher than the man stood tall, and in his human form, he certainly was not short — even as lean as was. Those black eyes widened, and only the crackling of burning wood sounded above the clink of stones falling down at the black dragon’s feet. They reflected their rainbows upon his tan skin, and his gaze narrowed as he lifted those dark eyes to meet the amber of Radek’s own.

No one moved. Their jaws gaped in envy. They had to realize how outmatched they were. Nobody dared move. None of them could woo his mate. Soon, they would take
