    Preface

    One of the most essential tasks for any individual, team or organization to be effective and successful is to set goals and pursue after it.

    So I’d like to start this book, by carrying out a self-check to see if you know the answers to the following questions:

    What do you want to achieve this year?

    What do you want to achieve in five years?

    What do you want to achieve in your lifetime?

    Sadly, if you were to ask most people the above questions, the average person goes through life with no definite aim or ambition, but just hoping and wishing that something good will happen, or at least nothing bad will take place- and with absolutely no aim in life, the chances are he/she would fail miserably. This characteristic can be traced back to the school days where we find the majority do not have goals in life. This is one of the basic reasons why majority fail to achieve anything worthy in life.

    If you were to ask anyone about his/her ambition, goals or aspirations in life, the most likely answer would be happiness or success. And what can get you to that state even if we were to take that as an answer? And note that this answer is certainly not a goal, but a vague and fuzzy situation which one hopes for. True success or happiness is a total sum of our accomplishments- mentally, socially, spiritually and financially, which eventually gives one a sense of achievement. Without goals, the average person just exists and drifts aimlessly in life, hoping to land somewhere. A man without goals is a lost man-lost in the sea of opportunities.

    Like a sign in an optometrist’s office says: ‘If you don’t see what you want, you’ve come to the right place!’

    Successful people think about what they want and how to get what they want which are their goals, and they get their goals by paying the price required to get to those goals. However, unsuccessful people discuss anything but what they want. They talk about their problems and worries, and look for who is to blame most of the time.

    To be successful, a person has to know what he/she wants, with a definite aim. And therefore success can be summarized as the progressive realization of your worthy ideals- whatever it may be that you consider worthy of your efforts. Picture any sport-if you take football as an example; the goal of the match is to shoot the ball into the net. Without that goal, there is no need for playing the football match. The same illustration applies to life, without goals you live an unexamined life which is not worth living-as it is like moving aimlessly in the dark. With goals, you fly like an arrow, straight and accurate to your target.

    This proves that one of the most essential tasks for any individual or group to be successful is proper goal setting. It is important to spend adequate amount of time on brainstorming and setting out on the goals you want to accomplish. Studies have proved
