CHAPTER ONE: LET’S GET IT STARTED
ARE YOU INSANE? No, this is not a joke; I really want you to answer the question, Are you insane?
You, like most people will probably answer the question with a very confident No
. Albert Einstein described insanity as doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result
. So, if you are not insane, why start off the new year with a resolution, why have the same outlook on life, why take the same approach when dealing with your loved ones, career, exercise routine, or spirituality? You may want to rethink the question before you answer.
You, like most people, including myself, started several new years in the past with a resolution. Resolutions are typically based upon an action of some sort that will change your current existence. These resolutions are made with such sincerity that most people are so determined to achieve this resolution that they fool themselves. The problem that so many people experience when attempting to maintain their resolution, is that resolutions are based upon actions and behavioral changes. However, actions and behaviors need to be changed not just with other actions or behaviors, but with a change in mentality. Consider this, fitness gyms witness a skyrocketing enrollment of new members the first week of the year. However, most of the people who sign up stop working out by the 15th of January. Why is this? It’s probably because in their minds, they can visualize what they want to achieve, but it’s physically harder to accomplish. Mentally you can see your new summer body, but after two weeks of hard training you may look the same, which may in all likeliness be discouraging. The action was joining the gym and the behavior was going to the gym on a regular basis. Unfortunately, the mentality was the same, and therefore most give up and go back to what is comfortable to them.
One thing I love about the bible is that it contains some great stories of individuals overcoming great odds. Guys like Jonah, Job, and David, overcame insurmountable odds and came out victorious. I noticed while reading these stories that they all did one thing that changed their outcomes, they changed their thought process. These figures understood that they themselves got in the situation, and after self-evaluation and the appropriate mental changes, they got themselves out. It also doesn’t hurt to have a ton of faith, as in most cases.
So, how do you change your mentality, if it were that easy then everyone could change overnight. Well, this is true, you CAN change overnight! Trace the origin of your negative action and destroy it. Destroy the excuses, destroy the negativity, and destroy the fear. I have an exercise for you; without thinking too hard, I want you to think of something that you perceive negative about yourself, after you identify it, I want you to repeat this sentence, I am too (fill in the blank with the negative thought)
. I know you have said that statement before, and you have probably used the statement as an excuse, as a justification for not taking action. I am too
will put a level of degree on your current existence.
Now, let’s try this exercise again, using the same word you used in the I am too
statement, except I want you to add one little word. Say I am NOT
too (fill in the blank)! That’s right, you are not
too old, you are not
too young. You are not
too anything to achieve a goal. You just located your excuse and destroyed it! Doesn’t it feel good? I want you to say that first thing when you wake in the morning. I am not too (whatever)! What is the activator of that statement, what gives it power? A little thing called belief. You have to believe it! Believe it with all your heart and mind. You were created in GOD’s image, so you have to destroy anything that gives you a negative self image.
I don’t believe in the 360˚ change rule thing, you know the one that goes I did a complete 360˚
. It’s true, turning any object 360 degrees is a complete turnaround, a rotation. That works for planets and the solar system. It
