    About the Author

    Pride & Prejudice & Love

    Chapter One

She was beautiful, tall with dark eyes and red lips, but she refused his advances in the beginning as if afraid to give herself away too quickly. When her father found out he was furious. His pride would get hurt even more when word spread that the daughter of an Earl was marrying a lowborn commoner. He told her she would only bring shame upon him by being with such a lowly person, but his daughter stood firm and she said he did not own her. She had grown tired of his constant nagging and his constant attempts to take control over her life. And after months of arguing with her about it she left home for London to seek her fortune there.

You can never come back here again, you hear me? I won't have you ruining my name or my face, so make sure your husband knows that before leaving him. Her mother spat at her from where she sat in front of the fire place.

    Goodbye Mother.

Her mother stared at her like she had just lost her mind.

    What do you mean? Goodbye?

I'm moving out. I hope you'll find someone good enough for you to keep you company instead of trying to ruin our lives.

With that, she went upstairs to pack her few belongings and left everything else behind. The house suddenly felt empty and cold without her father there shouting at her every hour of the day.

    Chapter Two

The ride to London was long and uncomfortable, but she managed to survive until she reached her destination. After paying her fare she looked around at the busy streets wondering which direction to go in. As she walked down one side street she heard the sound of music and laughter coming from the other side and followed it. A small crowd gathered around two men playing a game involving swords and a board filled with different colored squares. One of the players kept making mistakes and losing pieces to the other as the onlookers laughed at him and cheered for the winner. She smiled and joined the crowd as she watched him lose yet another piece and try once again to salvage it. She noticed that he seemed rather familiar and could not stop looking at him until the man spotted her watching him.

    Are you lost little lady?

He took her arm and led her over to a nearby table with four chairs surrounding it.

Have a seat and wait until we're done. He motioned for her to sit in one chair while the other three men remained standing. Would you care for some lemonade or tea? He asked as he poured her a glass of lemonade.

After sipping at the drink she turned to look at the players. They were still trying to play.

It looks like they are having fun. Do you play?

No I'm afraid not. It's a bit childish don't you think? He answered with a smile. You know most people enjoy watching others play games. If you'd like to watch a bit longer we can find something interesting to watch.

She smiled at him and nodded.

How old are you? He asked.

    She hesitated before answering.

    Twenty two sir.

And what brings you here young miss? To see all these gentlemen play? He inquired.

Oh I was passing through the area on my way to visit relatives in London and decided to try my luck. It didn't go well but it was entertaining nonetheless. What about you Sir? Are you travelling somewhere too?

I am indeed, but not with this group. He chuckled. You can call me George.

Very well then George. Can I ask how old you are?

    George grinned.

Why young miss I am nearly twenty five. Would you like to learn the game now?

They played a few rounds before Georges partner called out to him.

I'm sorry George, but the game needs time and concentration. Come back next year.

George shook hands with him and agreed.

Come back next year George. He repeated as he gave her hand a squeeze. Until then young miss. He bowed to her and disappeared into the crowd.

As soon as he had gone she turned to her companion and began to laugh.

That was ridiculous. We should not have been seen together.

I agree with you entirely. He smirked.

They both started laughing hysterically at each other, unable to speak. He finally calmed himself.

My name is Arthur and I must apologize for my friend's rudeness.

Apologize for George? No need. You both seem very friendly and fun. I enjoyed it immensely.

    Arthur blushed slightly.

Thank you young miss, I am glad to know someone appreciated it. Shall we head back home?

She nodded and they made their way back to the carriage. Once inside he offered her some refreshment but she declined. After finishing off the last bite of pie, she asked Arthur to help her into the carriage and they traveled back to the castle, stopping at a tavern for a late night meal. On the way back to the castle they exchanged numbers, agreeing to meet up the next week for another round of cards.

When they arrived back at the castle George helped her out of the carriage and helped her with her luggage.

I'll see you tomorrow at noon George. Thank you for the lovely evening.

    Anytime my dear.

The next day she entered the card room to see him already waiting for her.

    Hello Arthur.

Good morning miss. Please join me. He gestured to the empty seat across the table from him.

So I suppose that you wanted to teach me some of your tricks?

Yes Miss. He smiled, pulling the deck of cards out of his coat pocket. Please shuffle the cards.

They spent the rest of the morning in silence, occasionally speaking to fill the silence. By midmorning they had finished all the cards and Arthur handed her a stack of them.

We start with a simple game of patience.

How long do we have to play?

    Three hours at least.

At half past eleven they moved on to chess.

If you wish to leave early please let me know. He requested when they returned to the table.

Will do. Thank you for the lessons.

It is my pleasure. He smiled. Now you may want to put those away. The king is about to arrive. He pointed towards the door.

As soon as she saw the King of Hearts, she dropped everything on the table.

My apologies my lord. She whispered as she scrambled for the box.

Do not worry about it miss. I will have my secretary deal with these messes later tonight.

She tried to calm herself down as she followed him back into his office. He sat down at his desk and opened the drawer to retrieve a letter.

Here is an invitation to the royal family ball. He placed the envelope in her hand. You may bring a guest if you feel comfortable, but remember to wear something suitable for this occasion.

As she read the note she noticed a drawing of himself in the middle of the envelope.

Forgive me but did you draw this? She asked, pointing to the drawing.

Yes. He answered, a bit surprised by her reaction.

    May I keep it?

Of course you may. I would not be able to get anyone to take such a fine likeness of me even if I did try.

    Chapter Three

She smiled widely at him as she tucked the drawing in the inner pocket of her dress and exited his office. Once she reached the hallway she glanced down at the drawing and smiled to herself. She couldn't help herself but feel happy and excited about going to
