    A Life Unlocked

    CHAPTER ONE

It seemed like the night would last forever. My friend, Julie, had invited me to Eye Kandy; a club that only the invited were allowed in. It wasn’t open to the public. I didn’t ask questions how she managed to get our names on the list. Honestly, I wasn’t thrilled about her getting my name on the guest list, to begin with, I had heard things about this club. I liked to keep to myself. The club, Eye Kandy, was known to have the biggest crowd of people who were all for the world’s taboos. The night looked promising for jail or my body being discovered in a dumpster; ironic considering my line of work.

I arrived and Julie, of course, was nowhere to be found. Julie could be a total flake. Why I let her talk me into coming here, I’d probably ask myself for years, if I survived the night. Julie was 5’6’’, petite, pale skin, big breasts, blonde hair, and blue eyes. She was every man’s fantasy. It was yet another reason, why I wondered why we hung out. She was more like Barbie and I was more like She-Ra. Girly wasn’t my forte.

With a groan, I pulled out my cell and scrolled through my contacts. She answered on the fifth ring and assured me she was inside waiting. The many voices in the background were confirmation enough. I made it through the line to the gigantic bouncers, who looked me up and down with a grin that would make the devil blush, and then sent me inside without looking at my driver license. I had a weird feeling that my night would be never-ending and full of drama. Something inside me told me to go home, but, of course, my big, stupid heart prevailed over good judgment. I didn’t want to stand up Julie. I was always standing her up at the last minute. Usually work kept me from spending time with her; however, she made me promise to not bail tonight.

    ***

Eye Kandy wasn’t a stereotypical dance club; in fact, it wasn’t a dance club at all. There were fancy chairs and tables facing a big stage. The stage had blood red velvet curtains, and the room smelled of danger. I don’t know why I could smell danger, but it was clear as day.

This really isn’t a good idea, I muttered to myself then looked around for Julie. She was nowhere to be seen, so I called her. She didn’t answer, so I sent her a text. She replied with, 1st row in the middle. I hesitantly walked towards the front row and found her surrounded by drop-dead gorgeous men. They all had a similar look with their dark clothes and a similar grin that said I smile, now, but will have you in the alley dumpster, later. My job really made me look at life through different eyes. A normal woman would have swooned at their looks, not good ole detective me.

Ready for the show? Julie asked me smiling from ear to ear.

Something came up, I have to go, I mumbled. Julie’s face fell to disappointment while the guys’ faces fell to eagerness.

You should really stay, one of them said in a seductive raspy voice. Part of me felt drawn to him, while the other part of me wanted to rip him limb to limb. I cut my eyes at him and opened my mouth to say something to him but decided now wasn’t the time.

Please, stay, Cordi. Please, for me? Julie pleaded. She even gave me the look a child gives their mother when they want a toy or a puppy. I hated her shortening my name. Cordi made me sound like a damn dog. After tonight, she’d forever be in my debt and I’d make her promise to never call me Cordi again.

Julie, I don’t know about this place, I muttered looking around.

The place gave me the absolute creeps. I’ve been to some of the creepiest places on the planet, because of my job. Being a detective wasn’t a normal girl job, but it paid the bills and my day is never boring.

It will be fun, promise, she said bubbly.

Reluctantly, I took my seat beside her, as all the arm candy moved to their respective tables and chairs. It seemed like the instant they were in their seats the show began. The lights slowly dimmed, and the blood red curtains began moving to the sound of the eerie music. While the rest of the audience was in awe by the music, I glanced around. Only women were in the front row, and there didn’t seem to be any couples. Oh, god, is this a sex club? If it was, I was going to kill Julie.

    CHAPTER TWO

The curtains finally came up and the stage lights slowly brightened to where we could see a mysterious man on stage. He was dressed in all black... Black seemed to be the in color for this crowd, very Emo of them. The man slowly walked from the back of the stage to the front and brought
