    About the Author

    Chapter One

I’m sorry, Athena, you just don’t make the cut. The role is simply not for you, one of the hiring staffs say.

What did I do wrong? I can do it again, I say, waiting for them to elaborate.

Like I said, the role’s simply not for you. Your character is too strong, he tells me with a shrug as he writes down something on his notepad. Maybe next time. Next please.

I walk out of the stage, feeling miserable. It’s not the end of the world but I have to do something about this. I need to prepare for my audition piece for college. I can’t just videotape myself and act and convince them to take me in for a live audition. That’s not just how it works. My college life will be damned if I don’t do something as soon as possible.

Pst, I hear someone calls from the side.

I squint to take a better look and an old lady waves me over. I point to myself and she nods. As I walk towards her, I wipe my face with the sleeves of my shirt. I look like a mess.

What? I ask in a whisper when I’m closer.

There’s another production coming but audition won’t be open until next month, she informs me.

There’s another production after this? I ask, my hope starts to rise up again.

She shakes her head. Not here. Somewhere else. It’s a small production.

A small production. I pause for a short while. I…thanks for the offer.

You sure you don’t want it? This is the flyer. In case you change your mind, go there. She walks away after that.

I read the headline of the flyer. TRAPPED INSIDE. The title seems interesting. I can use this for my audition piece.

When I get out of the theatre, I almost trip myself because of the rope blocking my way. But luck is still on my side. I’m able to hold on to someone before the fall happened.

I’m about to say thank you but when I look up, I see an angel in front of me. Light shines down upon us and I can’t help but smile at him.

Get off, he says, taking my hand off of him.

I wobble on my feet and eventually fall down on the ground with a loud thud. And just as I think that I escape the fall. My eyes widen as I realize that my phone is on my back pocket. I take it out right away and see the broken screen. I glare at the guy. So much for calling him an angel. He’s definitely not an angel.

Jerk, I say to him as I stand up.

He removes his sunglasses and he casts a bored look at me. Whatever, stupid. He walks past me and all I can do is gape at the insult.

    Did he just… He just…

Wait! I call out as I turn around only to find the door being closed to my face. Who does he think he is to call me stupid?

I push open the door and locate the guy. I see him walking towards the production staffs. He’s also going to audition. But as I watch him with them, he acts like he’s the star of this production already.

Hey! You! I call, pointing a finger at him.

Everybody in the theatre looks at me. The staffs shake their heads and return to the work at hand.

You in a black leather jacket with black sunglasses and black everything, including your character. Who do you think you are to call me stupid? You have no right! I yelp in anger. I am in rage on the outside but deep inside, I’m hiding in a shadow. This is embarrassing and definitely not a character I want to show to the staffs.

I suggest you go home now, he pauses to look at the audition paper, Athena, one of the staffs—I recall he introduces himself as Brighton—tells me.

No. That guy called me a stupid. I step a foot forward to show my conviction. I am not just going to back up now that I’ve embarrassed myself enough. Why not make the most of it, right?

Because you are, the guy finally speaks. Can’t you just let it go? You called me a jerk for no reason. I think we’re even. You’re just showing that you really are stupid.

I walk closer to where he is. You are the jerkiest jerk I’ve ever met in my entire life.
