    Part 1

    A Twist Of Fate

    Chapter 1

The hot air is like a smack in the face as I walk out of the air-conditioned movie house to the parking lot out back. The weather has been above normal around here the last few days. With the heat and all, it feels like summer but it is almost the end of October. This, and the other stuff that has been going on lately, has made it one strange week for me. However, I will not get into that now.

Everyone is excited after the show tonight, me as well. That is, until I see some idiot run up and over the top of my car, now standing on the roof, jumping up and down screaming his freaking head off.

Yow! What the hell is your problem, eh? I am screaming at him at the top of my voice. Nevertheless, with all the noise, the punk either doesn’t hear me, or just doesn’t care what I am saying. Oh, the hell with it, I say under my breath. I just wanna go eat and I will most likely see him at the diner. The little ass-hole.

So, who was that freak? Someone speaks up.

I’m not sure of the voice until I turn around. Starting from her feet then working my way up, I see platform boots, thigh-high fishnet stockings and a very short black leather miniskirt. Next, I see a see-through lace kind of top and long black hair that covers most of the front of the shirt, so that I cannot see anything else through it. This makes me smile even more and by the time I get to her face, my eyes are popping out of my head. I really love leather.

Oh, it’s you, Freyja. Trying to keep my composure, knowing I already blew it all to hell, and thinking how I need to go out into the audience more often because I don’t get to see her as much as I would like to sometimes.

I don’t know but I do hope he goes to the diner. I so badly want to go off on him. I am a bit perturbed.

What are you gonna do? Freyja says, grinning at me.

Nothing really. I am just going to scare the piss out of him. That’s all, I say, smiling.

Okay. Well, just wait until I get there please. I want to see it. Then she begins to walk off towards her car.

Okay, I will see you there. Just watch the way you drive. I hear the cops are stopping a lot of people lately.

Yeah, me too. Later. Freyja waves to me at the same time as she bids her farewell.

Oh, by the way. Have you seen Rhiannan? I don’t want to leave her here and have to drive all the way back to get her. I ask as she’s walking away. I can see that she is getting annoyed with me a bit because I keep stopping her. Yeah. I think she got in a car with some other people. She should already be there.

Okay. With that, I shut the car door.

I am not driving long before I feel something weird coming on. The air feels heavy and charged and before I can focus on where this is coming from, the car dies. And I do mean it dies. No lights. No radio. No nothing. So I am wondering just what the hell is going on?

Well, if this doesn’t just suck! I scream at the top of my lungs. Not that anyone heard me. This is just great. I am in the middle of bum-fuck-Egypt and no way to get anywhere. But what I do know is that since magic did this, I’ll just see if magic can get me out of it. First, I find out who did this... Beetle! Cool. Now I can guess how the little prick did it. Therefore, I’ll undo it... I turn the key. Yes! It starts. Man, I can’t wait until I get my hands on that damn half-breed of a want-to-be who thinks he is hot shit but is barely a witch. He ain’t going to know what hit him.

Then it occurs to me I can’t go into the diner, and hit him over this. It’s not the ethical thing for a Magus to do. I am going to have to handle this another way. Oh, well. I can’t do anything anyway until I get there. However, I do have an idea.

Hey, M&M. You’re here! I pull up to find my girlfriend all shit-faced and hardly able to stand. However, it does not surprise me. It is one of Rhiannan’s favorite pass-times. That and the show we all just came from.

What’s the matter with you? You look pissed. Rhiannan could barely get the words out of her mouth. She already knows that I don’t like her getting stoned like that. I won’t say anything this time. I have other things on my mind right now.

Well, for one, you know how I feel about you getting fucked up like that.

    What? I slipped. I couldn’t help myself.

And for two, the car broke down on me on the way here. Anyway, Rhiannan does look sweet this evening, all dressed in leather and lace. I am almost getting enthused. Leather just does something for me that way.

Were you at the show? I didn’t see you there. I ask.

Ah, yeah. But I kinda got loaded out in the parking lot, so I missed most of it. It’s hard to understand Rhiannan speaking when she is drunk.

So, what else is new? I ask, walking away from her in disgust.

Rhiannan is pretty cool, when she is sober. She has legs up to her neck and long jet black hair. She dresses Gothic, meaning all in black, pretty much like Freyja, with a personality to match the life-style she tries to portray. I simply don’t like her getting stoned all the time. It’s getting old. I can understand that the girl is young and doesn’t want to settle down yet, but Rhiannan wants to dwell in the Craft and call herself a Witch. You cannot do drugs and be in the Craft at the same time. It just does not work that way. On top of that, Rhiannan’s one of the most close-minded people I have ever met. But I do love her and that’s why I put up with it, I suppose.

I guess by now, you are wondering what I am about and I should let you know about me. I am M&M. That name has stuck with me for thirty years now and I can’t even remember how I got it now. Only Rhiannan and a hand-full of others know my real name. I will let you figure this out on your own, as well. I am 195 pounds, six foot three and I have long black hair, down to my butt. But here is the clincher, my age is 531. However, I do not look a day over 25. This is not an easy thing to pull off every day either, a 531-year-old Magus, looking 25 or so. In fact, it can be a real bitch. Every 30 or 40 years, you have to move on and start a new life. But it is the way it is, in this life of mine...

I spoke of a handful of others a while ago and as you may have guessed, they are like me, too. But for now, we will just go on with the story.

Hey! M&M! Is Stupid here? Freyja says while running up to me.

Oww! Shit! I hit my head on the glass door as I am turning around to see who is yelling at me.

Did it hurt? Freyja skips her way up to the entrance.

I have no clue, smart ass, and yes it did.

Bite me. Freyja says as she darts past me to go find a seat. As I walk through the door, who do I see but Beetle sitting all by himself. He has a big old shit-eating grin across his face. Then he sees me and the grin that he likes to wear so well disappears and changes to guilt as he realizes he knew that I knew what he had done. In an attempt to act as if he doesn’t know what is up, poor acting on his part, I hear, It took you long enough to get here. Why? And you look pissed.

Do I look pissed? Why should I be pissed? Do you know something that I don’t? The look on Beetle’s face is almost too funny.

No. Why? He just looks so stupid.

Whatever, dude. I will deal with you later. I got something to do.

Um, yeah right. Whatever. He goes back to whatever he is doing.

Then my attention shifts towards the asshole that had been jumping on my car. I see the idiot behind Freyja who is on her way up the aisle to let me know he is here. I see him, Sweetie. She stops dead in her tracks waiting for me to pass her.

As I walk up to the table, I can see that the kid has no clue who I am.

Excuse me a minute people... What is your name? The kid looks up at me like there is nothing wrong. He is dressed like one of those vampire people which makes me more irritated. Um Mat, why? I kind of get a stern look on my face. Then I proceed to scare the shit out of him.

I don’t know if you realize it or not, the car you were jumping on back in the theater parking lot is mine and if you don’t want to spend the rest of your life as a coat rack you won’t do it again. Do I make myself clear? As I am talking to him, the kid begins to stare down at the table, not wanting to look at any one. You can see that he is getting the message and will undoubtedly not do it again. I glance at Freyja and she is laughing her ass off. Everyone else at the table is just looking at me, wondering what the hell is going on. As I glance back toward Mat, I hear a timid voice say, I’m sorry, I won’t do it again. By now it is getting hard not to bust out laughing.

Apology accepted. I want to apologize to the rest of you people, but this needed to be said. Sorry. I immediately turn away and start tripping out, on the way Freyja is getting off on this.

Pull yourself together, woman. It isn’t that funny, I say sarcastically.

Yes, it is, she says while laughing.

Whatever. I’ve got something else to do. I begin working my way back to where Beetle is sitting.

Beetle sees me walking over to him and has a questioning look on his face. He asks, What the hell is wrong with you?

Now this is making me sick. This concerned act of his. Maybe he thinks I have a short memory or something. I don’t know.

Now, let’s not play games. When it comes to this guy, I have lost all tolerance.

    Play games?

Well, I guess. If you were really telepathic, you’d know, wouldn’t you. I begin to have an attitude.

I have absolutely no clue what you are talking about.

By this point, I feel like I’m about to beat his ass. I need to make an exit. Yes, you do. And since you don’t want to come clean now, have no doubt... I will deal with you later.

What? Now he has a concerned tone to his voice

As I turn to leave. I notice that Freyja has been observing the whole conversation and is making her way towards me.

Hey, Hon. Give me a hug. I got to go.

Okay. Are you going to tell me what is going on?

Maybe later. So, I give her a hug and I hear. You better.

I yell out over the people, Anyone seen Rhiannan? and I get back in unison, Yes, she is out in the parking lot! I wave goodbye and head out to the car.

Thanks, later all! So, I manage to get her in the car so we can get under way and I begin to wonder if I can make it home without me and the little woman getting into a fight.

Damn. I didn’t think I pissed you off that much. Rhiannan is now in her weary mode, wondering what all is wrong.

You didn’t. I guess that I was in the diner longer than I thought I was, she sounds half-sober.

    So, what’s up?

Nothing. I got a lot on my mind and I just want to go home. So I pop in a CD of De-Laid Reaction and listen to it for the rest of the way home.

    Chapter II

As we drive up into the driveway, I look over to see Rhiannan is asleep with her head propped up against me. Hmmmm. Damn she is pretty when she is sleeping, I think to myself as I walk around the car, pick her up in my arms and begin carrying her into the house. As I am unlocking the door, Rhiannan begins to wake up.

H uh? Is all she manages to get out of her mouth.

It’s okay, Sweetie. Go back to sleep.

What’s with you? I hear a timid voice say. You ain’t been nice to me all week.

Nothing, let’s just get you into bed.

Rhiannan nods back into sleep and as I lay her on the bed, I am glad this is over with. Just as I get to the kitchen and grab a beer, the telephone rings. Now, I just know if someone is calling me at five in the morning, on a Sunday, it’s got to be over Beetle. I might as well get it over with.

    Hello. Sipping on my beer.

Well, good morning. I think you know what this call is about.

I sort of guessed. But I really didn’t, and I am hoping to learn why Beetle even had to play his games tonight. However, I also know by the tone of her voice that this was not going to be good and that I was not going to find out anything more than I already knew.

    "It seems there was a
