    Executive Summary

    概要

Western Medicine’s (WM) clinical psychology has been developing for about two centuries. The fascinating growth in knowledge regarding human cognitive and psychological mechanisms has occurred only in recent decades. Even with the assistance of neurology studies, clinical services still seem insufficient. One of the primary reasons is that the psychological field, in contrast to its peer fields in western medicine, must take cognitive, social, cultural, biological, neurological, and many other factors into account when administering treatment. This early stage of the development of psychology could benefit from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which has more than 6,000 years of history, with a proven theoretical foundation and rich medical experience in viewing and treating the same group of symptoms as those from WM.

With the rising number of psychiatric disorders in the world, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, taking the view of TCM into account would benefit not only the healthcare system as a whole (in terms of cost-effectiveness) but also each individual’s health (in terms of healingeffectiveness). In this book, I focused on illustrating the theoretical foundation of TCM and its view of psychotic disorders to help my WM medical peers better understand TCM’s value. I discussed the mechanism of TCM in healing people (rather than just treating people) by using the universe’s wisdom (Yin and Yang) to provoke our bodies to heal themselves. I also discussed TCM’s principles regarding diagnosis and treatment (i.e., acupuncture and herbal medicine) and its applications in the period of long COVID-19. Qigong (and Taichi), which I did not illustrate in-depth due to the limited room in this book, is another proven, cost-effective healing approach that applies the same theoretical foundation as acupuncture and herbal medicine. To convince more of my medical colleagues, I discussed the effectiveness and pharmaceutical mechanism of herbal medicine and acupuncture using western medicine research. As is often said, knowledge without being understood is regarded by humans as nonscientific (which is hilarious, reflecting the ignorance of some people about the unknown). I sincerely hope that this brief study of the TCM view of psychiatric disorders will shed a little light on clinical psychology development. I also hope this work will facilitate both sides (WM and TCM) in gaining insight from each other to benefit the core of humanity.

    Appraise for this book

Dr. Ying Zhang is the president and professor at Singularity Academy in Switzerland. She has made outstanding achievements in the academic fields of economics and management with a high reputation. Later, she developed a strong interest in traditional Chinese medicine and studied diligently and thoughtfully, with outstanding talent. She took three years to complete a seven-year university program in Traditional Chinese Medicine (in both majors of acupuncture and herbal medicine) with excellent grades. She also spent two years studying Western medicine. She is one of those who embrace Chinese and Western medical knowledge.

The long-lasting epidemic of Covid-19 has caused great harm to the population, caused many mental illnesses, and brought great confusion and challenges to Western medicine. Dr. Ying Zhang’s book studies the common mental illnesses and brain fog mentioned by Western medicine. Her book discusses the TCM ideology of originating in the heart and manifesting in the brain (the heart dominates the spirit, and the brain is the home of the primordial spirit) to analyze the disease and treatment principles by focusing on the clinical manifestations of mental illness and brain fog and using the ideology of focusing on the heart and the brain and treating the five internal organs. This ideology and analysis are very commendable.

I am happy to read Dr. Ying Zhang’s book. The book combines Chinese and Western medicine knowledge with a clear structure and rich content. This book’s publication will greatly help medical peers and broaden their thinking in diagnosis and treatment.

Prof. He Shuhuai, with over 60 years of experience teaching and researching Chinese medicine and acupuncture. A former dean and professor at the School of Acupuncture, Moxibustion, and Tuina, Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, China. A professor and honorary dean at Qihuang College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Italy.

The COVID-19 pandemic spread across the globe for nearly three years. It produced an enormous impact on people’s mental health. The psychological effect is a consequence of many Covid 19 patients. During their long-term recovery stage, it also happened to public people who have a massive change in lifestyle due to lockdown, unemployment, or distance working model. Dealing with catastrophic mental health problems can’t entirely rely on antidepressants, and the option of alternative medicine should be taken into consideration.

I am delighted to read Dr. Ying Zhang’s manuscript. She comprehensively analyzed many common clinical diseases in mental health from the fundamental theories of traditional Chinese medicine, Western medicine, and psychology. Traditional Chinese medicine treatment methods include acupuncture, herbal medicine, qigong, and tai chi. The current scientific evidence of these therapies is also discussed. This book is comprehensive in content, detailed in analysis, well organized, and with clear logic and sufficient evidence. It is a practical book for both medical practitioners and Covid patients.

Prof. dr. Tiejun Tang: a former professor at the Military Medical University, China. With 38 years of experience in teaching and researching Chinese medicine, he is a practitioner of London Knowhow Acupuncture (Harley Street 1, London) and a professor and visiting professor at various Chinese medicine schools in the UK, Europe, and Canada. He is currently the Chairman of the Chinese Medicine Alliance U.K.(CMA), the executive council member of the World Federation of Chinese Medicine Society (WFCMS), the vice Chairman of the Special Committee of Clinical Cases Study of WFCMS, and the vice Chairman of the Special Committee of Epidemic Disease of WFCMS.

Prof. dr. Ying Zhang’s new book on treating psychiatric disorders using traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) sheds light on the importance of cross-disciplinary studies and practice. This work will open your eyes by showing the possible mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in helping with Long Covid and why TCM could be effective in treating mental diseases in terms of cost and performance. This work is significant to patients, doctors, policymakers, and healthcare managers.

Prof. dr. Feng Zhu, MBA Class of 1958 Professor of Business Administration, Harvard University.

As a lawyer, my comments will focus less on the medical concepts presented in this outstanding work of Prof. Dr. Zhang. Other commentators who are better qualified to do so shall do so instead. Why do I think it is vital that a Professor for Entrepreneurship and Innovation starts digging her heels into the world of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and its many applications in the modern world? It is simply because I can’t help to think that the world of medicine still has a long way to go in terms of its capacity to heal at all and its ability to heal at a reasonable cost.

In this regard, it is of paramount importance
