    Chapter 1

    Introduction

‘Manners Maketh Man’ wrote William Horman, a former headmaster at Eton School. Whilst the language he used might be outmoded in our society of convenience and instant gratification, the sentiment stands as a bastion of human civility.

There is a narrative that runs through Society about the decline in good manners and it is all too easy to blame the generation before ours. Perhaps it goes deeper than a simple generational difference and instead there is a lack of guidance and influence from All of us; a lack of knowledge in what good manners actually look like?

A good friend of mine on entering a restaurant with her two children, addressed them with a stern: Now, we’re going out so behave yourselves! And sure enough they didn’t heed the warning because she forgot to tell them what good behaviour actually comprises. Without a fundamental instruction in how to interact with those around us, how can a child or even an adult begin to understand politeness as it cannot all be left to instinct and intuition.

They were probably the biggest reason I put together an everyday approach to etiquette and manners, that is relatable and useable for everyone to make life better.

    Why Manners Are Important?

They are not simply verbal acknowledgements; ‘please’ and ‘thank you’, but go far deeper into defining the kind of person who blends and enhances their presence seamlessly into any environment, making them an asset and their presence a real pleasure.

The impact of good manners is far-reaching, extending beyond immediate family and our social circles, but if practiced well, will seep into business connections, social activities and more intimate relationships. Boorish and unpolished language and behaviours are unpleasant to everyone and is unlikely to create the platform of welcome that will build bridges across language, status, race and gender.

This little guide is not an unwieldy set of directions for the elite of society or indeed those who strive to be part of
