    Secret SongBoy - Anna Skoyles

    Prologue

They sang together. She smiled down at him. That was the first time he had ever heard that song. What was to become his favourite song forever more.

    Chapter 1

Lewis turned up his favourite song, his Mum and Dad wouldn’t be able to hear him then.

He held his pencil case and sang in to it. Feeling the beat, Lewis danced about, he knew every word. Before he knew it, the final chords rang out.

Heart beating fast, Lewis sat down on the bed, wishing he knew how to write a song like that.

    Or any song.

Pebbles, Lewis’ cat, jumped up and sat beside him. She purred and head butted him.

He stroked her and said softly, ‘You always like it when I sing that one, don’t you girl?’

She head butted him again and meowed. Laughing, he carried on, knowing that meant yes and also to keep stroking her.

Grabbing his shiny electric guitar, Lewis sneezed loudly.

‘Stupid dust allergy’ he said, carefully wiping off the rest of the dust.

His put his fingers on the c chord his Dad had taught him ages ago and then flung it on the bed.

‘That doesn’t sound right, does it Pebbles?’ Lewis stroked her under the chin as she purred loudly.

There was a knock at the door. Lewis hid his guitar under the duvet before answering.

His Dad handed him his football bag. ‘Are you ready? We don’t want to miss the game!’ He looked around. ‘Hey, where’s your new guitar? It’s best to keep it on the stand, like I told you.’

‘Oh yeah, I forgot. Pebbles was trying to nibble the strings, so I hid it under the duvet.’

His Dad laughed. ‘She’s so playful for an old girl! I do love that cat!’

‘Yup. She’s the best.’ He gave her one final stroke and hugged her goodbye.

Lewis grabbed his hat and looked back at his room, still wondering how songs were written. It’s a shame Pebbles couldn’t help him with that, sitting there all cosy on the bed. At least she wasn’t going to tell anyone his secret.

    *

Craig waved at Lewis from the football field, stopping doing the warm ups to say hello to his best friend. The coach told him off.

‘Oops, better get back to it!’ Craig said, nearly falling over, mud already all over his legs. ‘Where have you been Lewis?’

‘I was helping my Dad out, we’ve got some stuff to sort out at home with Mum being away.’

The boys joined the rest of the team running up and down the pitch. Lewis slowed down, holding back from the others to stay with Craig.

Craig attempted to speak between puffs. ‘Where’s she gone this time?’

‘Long haul, again, to Australia.’ Lewis jogged next to his friend.

‘Sydney?’ Craig wiped the sweat dripping off of his head.

‘Yeah, she said she’ll take me
