TRUE-LIFE
Strumming away on my electric guitar in my best mate Claire’s bedroom, I scribbled down some lyrics.
‘Let’s try that one again,’ I said, tapping my toes to the rhythm.
Aged 17 in 1979, I loved writing and playing music.
After seeing punk bands on Top of the Pops, a spark was lit inside me.
Girls can be rock stars too, I realised.
My record collection was chock-full with my punk heroes.
From the Buzzcocks to Blondie, Elvis Costello to X-Ray Spex.
Playing gigs at our local theatre workshop, we screamed feminist anthems at a room of bemused teenage boys.
Loved every minute.
