The Star that Grows Bigger 

Julia sits at her bedroom window. She is in her pajamas. It is not really late, but she has told her mom and dad that she is having an early night. 

The reason that Julia is up in her bedroom now, is that Julia wants to see if it is still there. Last night, when everyone was asleep, Julia was looking out her window at the sky. She saw a star. It seemed to grow bigger and bigger. Then her eyes closed and she fell asleep. 

Tonight she looks past the big tree up into the sky. There it is again! Can it really be getting bigger and bigger? Do stars do that?  

She wonders whom she can ask. Her mom and dad will tell her to go to sleep. Her older sister is talking to a friend on her cell phone. Perhaps she can ask her brother, Ben. 

Julia walks quietly to Ben’s room. Ben is in Grade 8. He is doing homework. He is very clever. Perhaps he will know. 

Ben, says Julia, may I ask you something? 

Yes? says Ben, looking up from his books. 

Do stars grow bigger, or do they stay the same size? asks Julia. 

As far as I know, they stay the same, says Ben with a smile as he goes back to his work.

Julia goes back to her room. She sits on her bed which is at the window. The star seems closer now! Julia rests her head on the window sill. Now
