Joe Aplon is heading for the small town of Riverton. He hopes to begin his job as a reporter at the local newspaper. He is also interested to see what his late great-aunt, Betty, has left him in her will. He is in for a number of surprises, not least among them, a dog named Rover, and a house in which to live. Then he meets some of the local people and becomes curious about rumours and fears. Rover is always at his side!

Joe’s Adventures
Joe Aplon was quite glad to get off the bus. Buses always seem to grow smaller and hotter on a long journey.
He stepped onto the dusty road with his rucksack on his back. This was the bus stop, the driver had told him. Joe took a deep breath as the bus rolled away in the other direction. Some of the passengers grinned and waved. Did they know something he didn’t know?
It was about three o’clock in the afternoon. The bus driver had told him he would easily reach Riverton in twenty minutes, if he walked quickly. This was the little town Joe was going to. He was going to stay there in a house he had inherited from his mother’s aunt, his great-aunt, Elisabeth-Ann. And he was going to become one of the town’s newspaper reporters.
Joe sat down on a small bench under a tree nearby. This must be the bus stop. He opened his rucksack and took out a sandwich and a bottle of water. He had just taken a bite of the sandwich, when he heard a deep rumble of thunder. He turned around and saw that heavy, dark clouds had gathered over the hills behind him. Jagged lightning flashed another warning.
Joe realised he had better start walking towards the town if he did not want to be caught in the storm! A flash of lightning danced over the treetops near him. He knew he must find shelter.
Big drops of rain began to plop down in the dusty road. Joe could still not see the town. Surely it could not be far away now! He began to jog along to get there faster. But, the rain was also falling faster!
Out of the corner of his eye, Joe saw a clump of trees and a chimney. He hurried towards a cottage. Perhaps he could ask the people who lived there to let him shelter for a while.
