    Chapter 1

I am 12 years old. I know what you’re thinking. How can I tell the story of my life when I am only 12? What exciting or funny or interesting things can have happened to me already?

I think some of you reading this are already trying to guess. You think I was perhaps a poor girl who found some treasure. Or you think I won a competition. Nothing like that happened to me.

Before I start with my story, I want to say I am sorry that I cannot tell you my real name. You see, I don’t think you will believe me if I do. If you look around you, I may just be the girl sitting in front of you, or behind you, or next to you.

You will think that I am telling lies. That would make me a bit upset. I will just call myself Honey. That is what my mother always calls me. It is just a nickname.

The problem is this: my story is a backwards story. I will let you decide whether you believe me or not.

I was born on an island. Its name was Galoogalooga. (I can tell you its name because you won’t find it on any map.) My father was the king of the island. The reason he was the king is that my grandfather bought the island a long time ago and made himself king. When he died, my father became king.

The island is quite a long way from the Wild Coast of Africa. There are lots of rocks and dangerous sea currents
