Chapter One
Lost and Lonely
I WAS JUST 6 MONTHS old when I got lost from my first human family. I do not remember much before that time because I was just a baby puppy and puppies just do not remember much. Puppies just take it one day at a time. One day I had been playing in my backyard with a big dog named Lucky. Lucky lived next door and he had lots of friends. Every day there would be new faces I had never seen before. I did not know what my name was because I could not remember having been called by any name. No one had really loved on me very much and they just referred to me as the puppy. Maybe my name was puppy!
My first human mommy and daddy had to leave me all day to go to a place they called work. I had to stay in a crate while they were gone. I did not like the crate! I could not run around and jump and play. In the small crate there was nothing for me to do, other than sleep until they came back home. In the evening mommy would cook dinner. It smelled so good I would jump up and down and wag my tail. I would spin around and around with joy. Then they would sit at the table to eat and push me away. I did not want to go away. I wanted to eat too. What they ate smelled much better than my puppy food. I would make such a fuss they would yell at me and then put me outside. I did not want to be outside! I wanted to have my very own plate at the table with my mommy and daddy.
However, things did not always go like I thought they should. Maybe puppies were not supposed to eat human food at the table. Or maybe my mommy and daddy just did not know how to take care of a little puppy like me. Maybe no one told them how much time and love they needed to devote to me. Possibly they did not read any books about how to take care of me.
