The Father [Collins] works, and his wife [Lanette] is a stay-at-home Mom,who watches over their grammar school age daughter [Cassey],and son[ Sam]. While on the road to their destination,tragedy strikes the Family,and their whole world is turned upside down.

Gaspar DeMarco was Born and Raised in Newark, New Jersey to deaf parents. He attended both Catholic and Public schools while growing up there. He was in the Boy Scouts,and received numerous merit badges,and also the Daughters of the American Revolution Award. He has attended Lincoln Tech.,DeVry Tech.,and has Degrees in Automotive,and Electronics Technician. He is co-owner of a Plumbing,Heating,and Fire Supresion Company. This is also his first book as a writer.

Chapter One

Getting Ready

Lanette, and her husband Collins were sound asleep in their bed, while their kids, Cassey and Sam, were tossing and turning in their beds, dreaming about the vacation the family was about to begin. The dark night sky was starting to lighten up, the moon was still bright. As the early morning sun was rising, you could see the mist through the trees, the dew in the grass, and the birds and squirrels coming out to play. By this time the kids Cassey, who is a pretty eleven year old, who has long wavy sandy-brown hair, with blue-green eyes, who looks older than her age, and Sam, who is eight, has dark brown hair, and brown eyes, are starting to move around in their beds.Their eyes open real wide, and can’t wait to get up, because it’s the start of the vacation.

As the kids get out of their beds, and run into their parents room, still in their pajamas, they’re shaking their parents, and in a high pitched excited tone saying, get-up, it’s time to go, let’s get packing.With the sound of the word packing enough to let them lay in bed and roll over, Collins and Lanette knew that it was time to get up, and start all of the chores needed to get the day underway.

Collins, a good-looking man in his early fourties, who has dark blonde hair with brown eyes, and his wife Lanette, a beautiful woman in her late thirties, with long brown hair, and brown eyes, make their way downstairs from their bedroom, wearing bathrobes, covering up their pajamas.

The kids are in their rooms, getting their clothes ready to take into the bathrooms, after they take their showers. By this time, Lanette was making breakfast, and Collins was going over his packing list and directions. Cassey and Sam had finished their showers, got dressed, and made their way down to the breakfast table. While eating, they were talking about everything they had to pack. Collins and Lanette were listening to their kids talking, and said that they were only going away for about two weeks, and not taking an ocean cruise, so the kids started to laugh and said that we’ll only take what we need, and Lanette said, Oh yeah, that’s everything, then they all started to laugh.

Now that breakfast was over, and all the dishes were cleaned and put away, Lanette went upstairs to take her shower, and get ready. The kids were busy in their rooms packing, and Collins was doing last minute changes to his list, then bringing his and Lanettes bags downstairs, since they had packed the night before.

While Collins was putting his and Lanette’s bags by the front door, all you could hear was the banging of bags, and bouncing of toys off the stairs as the kids came down. Do you need to bring all of that stuff?, their dad says. Didn’t your mother tell you to bring only what you need? And the kids replied, We need all this stuff , so their dad said okay, but whatever doesn’t fit will be left behind, and the kids said okay.

Lanette was just making her way downstairs, and she was carrying a small bag, and Collins says, What’s that?, another bag?, and she says, Yes, but it’s only a small one, so Collins says to her, Hey, just like I told the kids, if it doesn’t fit, we’re not bringing it.So, Lanette smiles, and winks and says okay, but I know there will be room.

Collins goes upstairs to take his shower and change, Lanette and the kids are bringing the bags out to the van. After all of the bags are out by the van, Lanette goes back into the house to see if any bags were left behind, and to check on the house, to see if any of the faucets or lights were left on, and that the house was in good order before they left. As Collins makes his way downstairs and starts to walk out the front door, he grabs the cooler that has drinks and sandwiches for that day, since he wants to make a good head start on the first day. Don’t close the front door just yet, he says, I still have to check the house, and set the light timers, so people think that someone is home while we’re away, and if something doesn’t fit in the van, i can still bring it in, and also, if someone has to use the bathroom.

Now that the van is loaded, and whatever did not fit in the van went on the roof rack. The kids were in, the wife was in, the front door to the house was closed and locked, then Collins gets in the van, starts it and says, If anyone forgot anything it’s too late, and if anyone has to use the bathroom, you’ll just have to hold it. Make sure everyone has their seatbelts on before I start the van. Everybody ready?, Yes, they all replied, okay, let’s go.

As the van started backing out the driveway and rolling onto the street, Collins says Now we’re on vacation, and the family let out a loud Yeahhhhh! Lanette had leaned over and turned on the radio, a song came on the radio that they all knew, and started singing the words, shaking their heads, and waving their arms. It was a family being a family. As they drove down the street that they’ve known as home, passing by their friends houses and waving to them saying see you in two weeks, while thinking about what they are going to do, and what stories they are going to tell, they turned off the old familiar road onto something new and different.

By now they made their way to the on ramp of the interstate, and everyone was just starting to relax, even though they were still excited for the trip that lay ahead. Collins was telling the kids not to jump around too much in the van, since there was so much packed into the van, that he could not see clearly out the rear view mirror, through the rear window.

Chapter Two

The Family Car Mishap

Hey Babe, Collins says to his wife, lucky we bought this van with two side mirrors, compared to our old car that only had the drivers side mirror. Yeah, well, it was time to get rid of that old car anyway.Every time we would fix one thing, something else would break. Even though this isn’t a new van, it’s better than what we had, says Lanette.

Their old car was a big, dark brown station wagon, with tan vinyl seats that were starting to fade and rip.Besides being hot in the summer, and cold in the winter, the tan carpet always looked dirty, no matter how many times you cleaned it. What finally made them decide to get the van, was that the car had broke down again as Collins was on his way to work. That morning was rainy and cold, and the car had stalled in the driving lane, so he had to make his way over to the right hand shoulder, and pull off the road. Collins called a tow truck, and told the driver to bring the car to the garage where his friend Anthony works.As Tony, that’s what Anthony’s friends call him for short, saw the tow truck pulling in with his friend Collins’ car on the back, he directed the tow truck driver over to a spot on the side of the building where he could drop the car off. Collins and the driver get out of the truck, and walk to the back of the truck, and the driver drops the car off of the back of the truck, and Tony walks over and asks Collins What’s wrong with this thing now?, and Collins replies, I don’t know, you’re the mechanic. As Tony was laughing, Collins wasn’t too happy that the car had broke down again. Now Collins had to call his job, and tell them that he wasn’t going to be able to make it in today. Collins already had enough on his mind with the car being broke, now he had to talk to his boss.

Collins’ boss is not a nice man to deal with, let alone work for. He is not a tall man in stature, and along with his position in the company, he orders people around with his mean nature. The employees refer to him as having the Napoleon complex. So, as Collins calls into work, dreading having to talk to this man, he answers the phone, and Collins says to him, Mr. Reed, I won’t be able to make it in today. Mr Reed, being in a unusually good mood, says to him "There’s not a lot of business that is going to be conducted today because of the weather, so take the day off, and we’ll see you in the office tomorrow. After getting off the phone with his boss, Collins was pleasantly surprised at his attitude. With the aggrevation of the car breaking down, thinking of how to deal with his boss, and the cold, snowy weather on top of everything else, Collins still did not know what was wrong with the car yet.

So, I guess that you got the day off, huh? says Tony. Yeah, answers Collins, with a look of relief on his face. Well, I guess that your not going to hear any complaints today. Nope, says Collins, since his position is in customer service, dealing with customers, and hearing complaints. Well, anyway, talking about customer service, how’s the car looking anyway, Tony? Let’s go and take a look. Tony opens up the hood, and checks all of the fluids, then he asks Collins to try and start the car, while he is looking under the hood. Well, what do you think?, asks Collins. Well, let me tell ya, it ain’t looking too good there, buddy. Okay Tony, what are we looking at? Well, to fix the car is more than what the car is worth, so you have a big decision to make. You could either fix the car, and hope that you get your money’s worth out of it, or junk it, and take that money and put it towards another car. After hearing that type of news, Collins calls his wife and says to her, Lanette, I an at Tony’s garage, and the car is broke. Tony says that to fix the car is more than what it is worth, so we have a decision to make. Either fix the car, or junk it, and take the money, and buy another car.

Lanette knew that this going to happen sooner or later, and she didn’t have much faith left in that car anyway. She was happy that the car had broken down with Collins driving it, and not while her and the kids were driving. So, when her husband had asked her what she thought about what they should do with the car, she said that the car had been good to them for as long as they have had it, but
