Mae felt like a jack-in-the-box. One minute she was so excited about moving to a new town, in a new state. The next minute she would sit back thinking about what might happen in this new town. Would kids like her? What was the school like? Then she would be right back jabbering in her father’s ear asking if there were any kids in the neighborhood, what the house looked like and were there any fun things to do.
It was dark when they pulled in front of their new house. Mae noticed it was just the right size, with a big, grassy front yard and lots of trees. Then her eyes caught sight of the big house next door just as the full moon swept out from behind the clouds. It was big and scary looking. It was as if she had her own haunted house in the neighborhood. The dark paint was peeling off the sides of the house. The shutters were all hanging from one point on the house. It definitely gave her the creeps.
The long drive was catching up to her so she didn’t even explore her house. She just found her bed and went to sleep.
The next morning Mae was awakened by loud laughter. Wanting to be a part of that, she pulled on her overalls and ran outside to see what was so funny. She did not expect what was happening.
Look at the gimp sitting on the porch, Ned. Can you tie your own shoes?
Nah, he’s like a little baby,
was Ned’s response.
Yeah, he probably changes his diapers too.
That was all Mae could stand. She figured Ned was the leader of this rabble
