    Introduction

Do you feel that your life has little meaning? Are you constantly down on yourself? Do you think that your accomplishments are never enough? Do you find yourself wishing that things could be different? Well, they can be, and it’s important for you to realize that. You don’t need to be stuck in a demoralizing pattern of thoughts and an unsatisfying life. What’s needed is for you to reshape your self-talk and reach for empowerment.

Self-talk, also called inner voice, interior dialogue, and internal monologue, is your brain speaking to you within yourself. The messages it sends you play a part in whether you believe you are capable and successful and whether your life is fulfilling or not. The good news is that your self-talk doesn’t have to be negative. If you change your self-talk to something positive, you can change your life into one you enjoy, appreciate, and even love.

What does changing your self-talk mean? It means that you will root out your thoughts of failure and unworthiness. You will not think so badly of yourself or believe that everyone else is more successful and happier than you are. You will change your way of thinking and, therefore, your way of being. It may not be easy, but you can definitely learn how to do it.

You probably already know that relationships with other people are important to living a happy and successful life, but what about your relationship with yourself? Are your thoughts contributing to your happiness and accomplishments? Or are they standing in the way? What you think about yourself and the words that make up those thoughts have a dramatic effect on your life. Those thoughts about your relationship with yourself are your self-talk.

Self-talk and how you recognize, develop, and shape it are vital parts of your mental, emotional, and even physical well-being. You may not realize it, but how and what you think have powerful effects on your body and brain. The thoughts and words you use with yourself determine your reality and affect both how you see that reality and how you function within it. If you create and shape your reality through self-talk, you can make sure that it’s full of positive messages and actions that help you achieve success, satisfaction, and empowerment.

In addition to self-talk, empowerment is a key concept covered in this book. To be empowered means that you are able to make changes for the better in your own life, rather than waiting around for someone else to make those changes for you or for circumstances to take the choice out of your hands. It’s the difference between acting and being acted upon. Empowerment gives you the opportunity to determine the course of your own life.

Feeling empowered is big these days. Many people feel they need to be more empowered—in their work lives, in their home lives, in their emotional lives, and more. It’s good to feel empowered. It helps you do more and do it better. It helps you cope with modern life and your particular circumstances. Whether you’re a business executive, a stay-at-home mom, an artist, a student, or just a person who feels the need for something more in life, being empowered will help you succeed.

You’ve probably heard the term ‘empowerment’ a lot, especially in regard to businesses and their employees, but it’s also important when discussing individuals and their interactions. An empowered person is able to create better relationships with the people in their lives, whether those people are coworkers, family, or friends. And an empowered person has a better, more satisfying relationship with themselves.

Learning to guide your thoughts in helpful ways is a terrific tool on your road to empowerment. That’s where self-talk comes in. Using positive self-talk, you can, in effect, empower yourself. If your self-talk is negative, you can sabotage yourself and your chances for a successful, fulfilled life. Negative self-talk is the opposite of empowerment.

Control is one of the keys to empowerment. If you are controlled by others—or by your own thoughts—they have power over you. Taking back control of your thoughts and your life is a very significant accomplishment. Besides enabling you to live your own best life, taking back that control will help you shake off the harmful effects of negativity and self-doubt. That alone is empowering.

How do you know when you are empowered? One of the ways is to analyze your sources of validation, which are an important part of being empowered. Validation is the feedback you receive about how well you are doing. It tells you that you can be—or are—a success or a winner. Validation is an important part of who you believe you are and what you believe you can do. There are different kinds of validation, primarily external and internal.

External validation is when you receive positive feedback from sources outside yourself. This feedback can take the form of raises, promotions, good grades, thanks, kind words, or trophies, for example. Internal validation is when you feel good about yourself because of things you know you have accomplished and what kind of person you are. This kind of satisfaction comes from inside you. It’s even more important than external validation because external rewards can come and go, but your concept of yourself will be with you forever. Every day you give yourself internal validation or its opposite, internal criticism, which is the kind of negative self-talk that brings you
