Seeking the Gift of Good Fortune - Rose Royse

    Tossing the Coins

Select 3 coins of equal value.

Identify which side will equal 2,

and which side will equal 3.

Perform six-coin tosses to create a hexagram.

Jot down the number that totals each coin toss.

If the coin toss adds up to 6 or 8, draw a broken line.

If the coin toss adds up to 7 or 9, draw a solid line.

The first 3 lines are the lower trigram, side list.

The first toss is line 1, start from the bottom.

The second 3 lines are the upper trigram, top list.

The 6th coin toss is at the top.

First, find the lower trigram image in the left column.

Next find the image for the upper trigram in the top row.

Your number is the conjunction of the two trigrams.

    The Changing Lines

When your coin toss results in a 6 or a 9 you will draw a new set of trigrams which will reveal the changes as a new hexagram. This new hexagram adds to your story, revealing the dynamic forces of change moving forward. As the lines change the energy moves up.

    Casting With One Coin

For a quick and easy coin toss, use 1 coin. Determine which side is Yin, the other side will be Yang. The Yin side is a broken line, the Yang side is a solid line. Toss the coin 6 times, draw the lines, refer to the chart on the next page.

The Taoist Principle of Yin and Yang

    Trigrams, 3 lines – Hexagrams, 6 Lines

The broken line is Yin, the solid line is Yang

    The Hexagram Chart

The hexagram chart is the map for which story you have chosen as the answer to your question. Please refer to the previous page for instructions on how to toss the coins.

The result of the coin toss will identify the hexagram number for the story that will guide you to the wisdom of the sages.

There is no easy way to capture the depth of the random number generator that is embodied in the I Ching as there are many authentic translations.

This book is not a translation, it is a journal of a life, lived long, with a copy of the I Ching tucked into my backpack.

    The 8 Forces of Nature

    That Which Always Is

The 8 Elements of change in the I Ching Book of Changes

Heaven, the dynamic force of yang.

The sun always rises and travels across the heavens.

Earth, the sustaining power of yin,

always supports and nurtures new life.

    Fire creates and destroys,

always clinging to a source of fuel.

    Water nourishes and replenishes,

always returning to the heart of the earth.

    Thunder shocks and startles,

always awakening that which is sleeping.

The Mountain always stands firm in stillness,

    its stability protects valuable resources.

    The Wind always stimulates change,

gentle winds support, strong winds destroy.

The Lake and the joy of babbling brooks,

always travels along the path of least resistance.

To live in peace, one must be at peace.

    That which is without,

    shall not harm,

    that which is within.

1 Sage Rides Six Dragons to Heaven

Good Fortune to Those Who Persevere

The legend of six dragons, the six stages of growth.

The primal power of the dynamic force

of yang energy represents the strength of heaven.

Seeking the power of the forces of creation,

the holy sage rides on the backs of six dragons,

to attain the power that establishes

a proper place, for all the lands and all the people.

The six lines of the hexagram represent the relationship

of Yin and Yang as they advance and decline.

    Life emerges into the light,

    as constant change inspires awareness

    of the inevitable momentum,

of a beginning and an end for all things.

In the beginning of life on earth

    the individual species evolved,

each with its own harmony with nature,

in conditions that ensured its survival.

    Through perseverance the power

of the creative force expresses unlimited possibilities.

The virtues of the sage ensure the harmony of life.

    Strength comes from
