Interpreting Dreams – An Introduction – Why we dream, the meaning of dreams and understanding the symbolism of dream

Dreams have a high significance throughout many cultures which has not been lost over time. But why are dreams so fascinating?

Every night we dream for about 1.5 hours. During that time there is a fascinating interaction between our physical and mental processes which allows us to look into our mind and subconscious. Our heartrate can increase and we produce hormones. Scientists have not yet been able to tap into these processes so they have to rely on the memory report: the dream.

Interpreting our dreams is not an attempt to predict the future but is much more about understanding our subconscious processes and problems.

Would it not be wonderful if interpreting your dreams could help you to understand yourself better?

This handbook will not only help to give you the background knowledge you need but it will also explain why we dream and how to interpret your dream symbols.

    Preface

Every night we dream for about 1.5 hours. It always seems much longer and we have the feeling that we have been dreaming for hours. In reality, we have only experienced a dream sequence lasting a few minutes.

Do you think you are someone who does not dream? Wrong! Everyone dreams, even you. Normally, you could even dream anywhere from 4 to 6 complex dream stories and several short dream scenes every night. Many people have the feeling that they do not dream. This is because they cannot remember their dreams. It is not surprising, considering that we have already forgotten what we dreamed one or two minutes after waking up. If we go straight back to sleep, we can probably not remember anything about having dreamed at all.

If you have not been able to remember very much about any of your dreams up to now, that does not mean that it has to stay like that. It is not a genetic characteristic but is achievable through practice and in getting enough restful sleep.

I have always been fascinated about understanding my dreams but was seldom able to interpret my own as I could not remember very much about them. I asked myself how I could train my dream memory. I began to write a dream diary, as formal analyses have shown that keeping regular documentation of your dreams helps you to remember your dreams more clearly and more often. At the beginning, I did not have much success and was feeling despondent that I could not fill my dream diary. However, after a while I was able to remember key words and today, I am able to fill pages with my stories, using the key words as reminders of what had happened in my dreams. Do not be disheartened if you are not able to remember your dreams at the beginning: Practice makes perfect! After two or three weeks you too will be able to remember your dreams much more clearly.

The main reasons why you cannot remember your dreams are too little sleep and
