    Welcome,

Thank you for buying this book – and also for trusting me to offer words of advice on ideas and natural ways, techniques and remedies which may help you to better cope with the difficult and traumatic process of navigating grief.

I have professional therapist level qualifications in Clinical Aromatherapy, Herbalism, Naturopathic Nutrition, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Chemistry Of Essential Oils, Crystal Healing, Anatomy & Physiology, and Professional Relaxation Therapy. I am also a qualified journalist as well as an author and have written articles on natural remedies and health issues for a number of magazines, newspapers and journals.

I know that at this dreadful time you do not want to have to wade through an overload of overwhelming information so, with this in mind, I have omitted the history and background information on the various natural therapies and concepts which are mentioned in this book. This means you can simply dip into the various topics and chapters as you feel you want to and instantly access the required information to help you at that particular time.

Once again thank you – and I sincerely hope the contents of this book, which I researched and used myself in my own (ongoing) time of grief, are of help to you.

    ANGER MANAGEMENT

Anger can be a natural part of the grieving process but it can also be frightening and debilitating. Finding safe and effective ways to release and clear that anger is a vital part of good mental health and well-being. Anger can be particularly triggered if we are feeling hungry, alone or tired, so watch out for these things during your day. Anger can be addictive and the adrenaline rush of it may make you feel empowered. It can also offer ‘rewards’ in the sense that it can provide an avoidance, a defence mechanism and a distraction against underlying anxiety, vulnerability and low mood as it enables you to stay ‘engaged’ with the people / the world / the circumstances that made you angry.

    Anger can arise from:

Frustration: due to feeling trapped, confused and disempowered.

Sadness: unexpressed sorrow and sadness can manifest as anger.

Fear, Anxiety & Worry: these create inner tension that can be released as anger.

Disappointment: this can easily transform into anger.

    RELEASE THE ANGER:

    STEP ONE – RELAX

I know this is easier said than done but it’s vital that you find a way towards some form of mental calm at this stage in the proceedings. You need to find a way to release and discharge the anger – in a safe manner. Anger places you in survival mode, in a primitive state where clear and rational thoughts and behaviours are unlikely. The kind of thoughts and behaviours which are likely to stem from anger are destructive and can make situations even worse if they’re not pulled in so that the rational mind can gain control once more. Angry thoughts put you in a place of wanting revenge, feeling totally wronged and with thoughts that are at best irrational and distorted. That’s why it’s imperative you accept responsibility for your behaviour when anger is all you can see, feel and think about.

And that’s why it’s very important to coach yourself in how to relax when you find yourself in the grip of anger.

    WAYS TO CALM DOWN:

Remove yourself from the person or situation which has triggered your anger.

Count backwards slowly from 50 or 100.

Take some slow, deep breaths. Focus in particular on the exhale as this is the part of the breath that helps restore calm.

Picture / visualise yourself somewhere you
