About this ebook

When Karl Schmidt immigrated from Germany, he was searching for the American dream, but he never dreamed he'd fall in love.

The small, quaint northwest US town where he decided to settle was close to a large city, but the city was always too much for Karl. He loved the peaceful country and the wide-open spaces. He also loved animals and owned a veterinary practice which serviced the entire area.

One day a beautiful young woman shows up at his clinic with a very peculiar beast that is injured, and she insists Karl must help it. As he works on the animal Karl is shocked to find himself mesmerized with the young woman.

Karl learns that this woman, Dakota Maize, is indigenous and although he has never met a first nations person before, he is enamoured and falls fast in love with her – a love at first sight. He discovers the feelings are mutual.

But this lovely woman is from a place so different than the small town that Karl resides in. Her lifestyle and dreams are far from anything he can really understand. Their meeting leads to a quick romance, and they try to make this work even though they are from such different worlds. But Dakota longs for her family and her lifestyle on the reservation. She misses it dearly but cannot leave Karl, whom she also deeply loves. Distraught and caught in between two worlds, Dakota struggles with her choices.

This instalove romance is the Prequel to the series "Who Do You Love?" where lovers from different backgrounds find their way to one another and need to understand how to make it work – in the name of love.

    Chapter One – Karl

I smile at Ernie and nod. Really, it's no trouble, I promise.

His already red face grows even redder. I can tell he’s the type of man who is uncomfortable with expressing his emotions, gratitude in this case. No, I insist. He practically shoves the wheel of goat cheese into my hands, and I'm amazed at its weight. You do so much for me, coming all the way out here to look at my goats. It's the least I can do for your efforts.

I give a small laugh. Ernie, you do pay me, remember? Small installments once a week. That is payment enough.

Ernie makes his money off his goats and the few crops he has. He brings in a good amount of money despite only having a handful of goats, and we made a payment arrangement that works for both of us. I appreciate the business I get from him, but I want to make sure it works for him too.

He's shaking his head as I speak. Karl, I am aware of how far I am from your clinic. I know you go out of your way to pay me visits twice a month, and that's a kindness I can't ignore. Please, take the gift before I get more embarrassed.

I accept the gift against my own wishes, and I must admit that part of me is excited for the cheese. In my homeland of Germany much of the cheese was goat cheese, and I am very fond of it. Ernie no doubt knows this, as we have spoken of my life in Germany before, which makes the gesture even more special. Danke, Ernie. I promise you I will enjoy this. I hold it against my chest and take satisfaction from the grateful look in his eyes.

Having checked over all of his goats, the two of us say goodbye and I leave, my hatchback sputtering as I happily drive away.

This small farming community is very tight knit and friendly. I've lived here for close to two years now, since I was twenty-one, and I don't regret my immigration from Germany one iota.

There are times when I do miss Germany, though. There I lived on a small farm with my family, and I grew up with many animals. This is what spurred my desire to become a veterinarian, and after I completed my degree, at only twenty-one years old, I left to find better opportunities in America. I love Germany, and my family was very sad to see me go, but I was interested in this country that exudes life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, where people are dedicated to pursuing their ‘American dream.’ I had heard tales from friends
