    Chapter One

The school bell rang, dismissing Kim Weston-Williams’ class Friday afternoon. Don’t forget to read chapters two and three over the weekend, she said as her ninth-grade students packed their backpacks. There may or may not be a pop quiz on Monday.

Yes, Mrs. Williams, a few students responded while others grunted and groaned with end-of-the-week frustration.

They filtered out of the room as she packed her things, clearing out the magic board and closing the windows on her desktop. A couple of students stopped by her desk and asked about their mid-term grades, and she answered questions before her Pre-AP biology classroom finally grew quiet.

She sighed as she lowered into her chair, planning to wait for traffic to die down before picking up her oldest from middle school. Olivia usually spent that time hanging out with her friends in the carpool line before waiting in the library.

Kim pulled her phone from her purse to check her messages. Olivia had already updated Kim on her whereabouts, claiming she would head to the library soon. Another unread message was from her husband informing her Logan had woken from his nap, and Jack was working on his homework.

Kim and James split the household chores equally since they worked full-time jobs. James left early in the morning to make it across town to the University of Chicago in time for his eight am lecture or office hours, depending on the day.

Around two in the afternoon, he left to grab Logan from daycare and pick Jackson up from elementary school before returning home. There, he watched the kids until Kim returned after the school day. James would return to his office after dinner, working late to finish everything needed before waking early and doing it all over again.

Thank goodness it was Friday, and they could both sleep in tomorrow. Or, well, sleep in for about as long as their one-year-old toddler would let them.

Kim smiled at her husband’s message and responded, Thanks. Love and miss you.

He replied almost instantly, Love and miss you more. See you in a bit.

She bit her lip, excited to be with her family again after being apart all day. Only a few weeks stood between them and summer break. Each year they took a vacation to Ocean City, Maryland where they could soak in the sun all day, and Kim and James held each other close each night.

She thought of their vacation two years ago, before they’d had Logan. James had brought rope since the kids were sleeping well and no longer disturbing them at night. He had tied her to the bedpost and had his wicked way with her.

It wasn’t surprising to find out two months later that she was pregnant for the third time. It had all been worth it.

A knock at her classroom door drew her attention. Kathy and Jordan, her two teacher girlfriends, stood in the doorway, grinning.

We’re going out for happy hour, Kathy said.

    Want to join? Jordan asked.

Kim winced, feeling bad for turning them down again. She’d sworn that she would be available last time she’d rejected their offer, but that never seemed to happen. She was always busy with James and the kids, prioritizing the people who meant the most to her.

I can’t tonight, she began, but Kathy quickly cut her off.

Oh, we forgot. You’ve got to get home to your perfect husband. Kathy shared a glance with Jordan that made it clear they were teasing.

Sorry, guys, Kim said, hiding her smile. Maybe next week. I’ll talk to James about it.

Jordan waved her hand. It’s fine. Really. We’re avoiding going home to our sad, single lives.

    Speak for yourself, Kathy joked.

They stayed a bit to catch up, waiting for Kim while she packed her bag and followed them out of her classroom. They said their goodbyes in the faculty parking lot, and then Kim climbed in her car and headed to her daughter’s school.

The parking lot only had a few cars parked when she pulled in. She parked by the back doors and texted Olivia. A few moments later, her beautiful thirteen-year-old daughter came out, holding her backpack as she rushed down the steps. Her curls bounced and blew in the wind, and Kim loved that her children had inherited
