Chapter 1
Meandering through tall grass and trees was a narrow path that ended at a round hut in the bush. If one opened the roughly carved door and walked in she would clearly see the sky through yawning holes of the rotten thatch. During rainy season water noisily poured in.
The wall was made of mud sticking together the closely fitted poles. The rough poles were exposed outside. Inside the hut a smooth layer of red clay covered the wall. The floor was made of gray anthill soil. On one side of the hut was a single bed made of four poles rising about knee-high out of the floor supporting nicely weaved together sticks. Empty sacks neatly sown together and stuffed with soft grass served as a mattress where Belita and her two daughters lay barely covering themselves with a piece of a worn-out blanket.
Nine-year-old Nchembele as usual lay in the middle while her fourteen-year-old sister, Maureen, had been snoring gently near the wall until her mother shook her awake.
Mummy why have you shaken me awake so violently today? Are you Okay?
Maureen, whom people popularly called Mimimi because of her sister’s childhood mispronunciation, wondered.
Mimimi, I want to remind you how bleak my future is since I have no son to take care of me when I grow old. I want you to work hard at school that is why I wake you up very early every morning,
she paused.
After your uncles collected your entire late father’s property, I am hopeless because I have no son who could resist their property grabbing. Since I lost everything, you are my only hope my daughters
, Belita lamented while rising out of bed.
"Mother, do not worry. One day I will get all fathers’ property back
