Proverbs are often thought of as clichés—albeit clichés with a poetic touch. Proverbs, however, are far from meaningless and overused phrases. They often express in a compact and precise way complex thoughts that would otherwise require a great deal of explanation.
Japanese tend to use kotowaza often—more often than most English speakers. It would therefore be beneficial for you to pepper your vocabulary with these pithy pieces of wisdom. The fifty proverbs contained in this book represent some of the most useful kotowaza used in Japanese daily life.
