    INTRODUCTION

    Do you have a passion for the martial arts? Would you like a deeper understanding of the Japanese terms and names? If so, this book is for you.

    First, let me be clear. Yumi and I do not pretend to be karate experts. We do, however, have a passion for the Japanese language and many martial art disciplines use terms, commands, and names from Japanese. This book is intended to help martial artists in that regard.

    Will it help you with your forms or give extra power to your kick? No, not at all. Will it help with pronuciation and understanding of the language you hear in the dōjō? Absolutely.

    Take dōjō for example. You may wonder why there are lines above the o. That’s because, in Japanese, some vowels are enlongated. You may also see dōjō written as doujou. So, you shouldn’t say, dojo like two quick jabs, but rather do-jo-, lingering somewhat after each vowel.

    The characters (called kanji in Japanese) for dōjō look like this:

    Let’s break that down:

    dō—meaning way or path or even teachings
