Japanese Reading for JLPT N5 - Clay Boutwell

    INTRODUCTION

Taking the Japanese Language Proficiency Test is a great way to not only assess your Japanese skills but also to give yourself a concrete goal for your studies.

Goals help increase motivation and motivation almost always results in progress. Also, by making plans to sit in a test in a different city (usually), you are making a major investment of time and money. There are few pressures in life that can motivate better than time or money. That’s why I always recommend signing up and studying for the JLPT for any serious student of Japanese.

Still, this book should help beginners even if you are not planning to take the test. If you have learned hiragana and katakana, know a few dozen kanji, and can understand very basic Japanese grammar, this book is for you.

While we do include a few N4-level kanji (with furigana), the majority of the kanji shown is for N5. Vocabulary, likewise, is mostly limited to N5 vocabulary, but we have also included a few higher-level vocabulary if the word is extremely useful for the student. We have tried to indicate these non-N5 words when possible.

    SOUND FILES

While the reading section on the actual test does not have an audio component, we are including audio files for every essay and question. This is purely for extra practice. We recommend shadowing the text. Listen to the Japanese and then repeat it out loud. Pay attention to the pronunciation and intonation.

The download link at the end of this book includes MP3s for all the Japanese.
