The 2000 Most Common Words in Japanese

    Conclusion

    Introduction

Congratulations for getting 2000 Most Common Japanese Words in Context! You made a big step towards achieving a native-like proficiency.

We all know that the best way to learn a foreign language is to live in the country where the language is spoken. However, it’s not always possible for most people with jobs, schools, and family. That is why this book is assembled to give you the ultimate experience as if you are living in Japan. This book presents expressions and phrases in an order based on frequency in both spoken and written language. Therefore, the ones listed at the top are the words you would hear if you had just arrived on the streets of Japan.

When you are learning a language while being a foreign country you would normally resort to following a textbook that teaches you basic grammar rules, and perhaps looking up dictionaries for the meaning of words. In that manner, you only learn the words you look up. There are over a half million words in Japanese dictionaries. It would take over 100 years for you if you learnt 10 words a day. This book helps you accelerate that process to 6 months or so, depending on how many words you can attempt to learn each day.

One of the things you might attempt when learning a foreign language is to make friends who speak the language and learn from conversations with them. While it is highly recommended, what could be left out is the written language. In order to improve fluency, you will need to know the written language as well, and some words or phrases may only appear in writing. This book is comprised of frequently appearing words in both spoken and written Japanese.

This book is particularly useful for those people who have spent some time studying Japanese, and have some understanding of the grammar, but find it difficult to use the learned language in actual situations. When you master these 2000 words and phrases you will be comfortable with not just living in or visiting Japan, but also attending schools or having a business conversation with a native Japanese speaker.

Five reasons why this book will help you boost your Japanese proficiency:

    1. As words are listed by frequency in both spoken and written usage, you will have the same experience as if you are learning to them in Japan.

    2. Useful and practical expressions and phrases for real living or visiting.

    3. Both conversational and written Japanese.

    4. More than a grammar book.

    5. Modern and traditional culture

    How to use this book:

Following a list number, each word is presented with most appropriate Japanese written characters/English phonology [the abbreviated part of speech] English meaning, then a sample sentence in Japanese and the English translation.

    (Sample)

    1077-      緑/midori [n] green

    信号は色なのに青信号と呼ばれます。

Although traffic lights are green, they are called blue lights.

For English phonology, the revised Hepburn Romanization system is used, with an exception for long vowels. Long vowels are shown with a non-Hepburn Romanization that is authorized by the Japanese Foreign Ministry.

This chart shows the Romanization used in this book with each corresponding hiragana.
