    Foreword

I am delighted that Vinay has written this wonderful book containing pearls of wisdom to help all of us discover the diamond within us. It is indeed ironic that we seek happiness all over when real happiness is within us.

Thank you, Vinay, for helping us dust off the layers of cynicism and scepticism to see the shining diamond of positivity and happiness. Dear reader, the fact that the signals of the universe motivated you to pick this book to read is a good sign. This book is the handbook you need on this journey of self-discovery.

I very clearly remember the day I met Vinay for the first time. As a seventeen-year-old, on July 12, 1979, I reached Patel Hall of Residence to report as a first-year student in Aeronautical Engineering at IIT Kharagpur. I was very excited about joining IIT. I had studied hard for two years to clear the IIT entrance examinations, and finally, I was here in Kharagpur to report as a first-year student on campus. Excited, I certainly was, but I was full of trepidation about the ragging and what the seniors had in mind for me. As soon as I walked into the lobby of Patel Hall, I saw this young man sitting on the couch with long hair and a red bandana. I was sure that he was one of the seniors, and I sheepishly put my head down and said, Good morning, sir. He looked at me, and with a warm smile, he introduced himself as Vinay Singh, a fellow first-year Aeronautical Engineering student who had come from Jamshedpur. I was amazed by his confidence and poise. He seemed to have it all sorted. Instantaneously, he was my first guru on campus! Over the next five years, we became close friends. We had rooms in the same wing, and we often walked to class together. Vinay has always had a great presence of mind and a sense of timing. One of our fond memories is that of the time we had organised the Patel Hall Perpendicular Olympics.

We both graduated in 1984, and we moved on in different directions. While we have not been in regular contact, we have stayed in touch and met a few times in Mumbai, Nagpur, Sydney, and, most recently, Pune. Over the last few years, WhatsApp has been our platform for staying in touch.

Right from that first meeting, I have always looked up to Vinay. He has a calm and inspiring demeanour. Over the last fifteen years, Vinay has spent many years figuring out how to understand life better. I call him every so often, and every time, he provides an instant recharge and pointed words of wisdom. I am glad he has chosen to pen them in the form of this book, which I am sure all of us will find very valuable.

Over the last thirty-two years, I have been fortunate to have the opportunity to lead Persistent Systems. As part of my job, I meet many people, including many successful people. Over the years, I have gotten better at listening and observing, and I have realised the importance of using introspection and personal reviews. I have also had the opportunity to observe successful careers and those individuals who had early successes but could not sustain their early brilliance.

For those of you keen to explore career growth and success, I provide you with the following tips:

Learn to learn: Technology is forcing an exponential change in the way we work. Moreover, we are likely to have nearly a dozen different careers in our work lives, and with the advent of the gig economy, we may be pursuing multiple careers at the same time. Therefore, it is essential to understand how we learn and become efficient and effective at learning new things. Continually upgrading skills is not only crucial for survival; it is also your competitive advantage.

Build a network: We work in teams, and our collaboration with our colleagues and peers has a vital role in our success. All members benefit from the success of the winning team. In the hyper-connected world that we live in, personal reputation is very important to long-term career success. One important lesson that I have learned while building networking skills is that relationships are not just one-on-one but are rather a sum of multiple mutual relationships among many related individuals. Consequently, when you start contributing to the network, the network conspires to benefit you.

Write your plans down: For many years, I have made a habit of writing down my plans. My plans are usually not linear with one single goal, but I typically enumerate many plausible outcomes and actions that I can take to help me achieve or avoid these outcomes. I have been incredibly lucky and have often found myself in the right place at the right time. I believe that this is not entirely an accident; rather, I believe it is but a consequence of having a priori visualised plausible life plans. The fact that I have already visualised my path forward helps me decide what I can do to move forward.

Introspect and learn from your mistakes: We all make mistakes, and we must accept that. If we do not make mistakes, perhaps we are not trying hard enough. Making a mistake once is just fine, but what we must not accept is making the same mistake again and again. We often don’t realise that we have made a mistake, and to avoid this, we must inculcate the habit of introspection. Reflecting on our actions helps us get better at them the next time.

Be persistent: I named our company Persistent Systems because persistent systems is a technical term that is well known to database practitioners. It refers to systems that are disk-based and hence persistent. Over the years, I have realised that persistence is what makes the difference between those who succeed and those who don’t. All of us have bad days. There are days when we miss out on winning a deal, and we have other disappointments. However, those that are persistent come back to fight again on another day. There is an excellent quote attributed to Calvin Coolidge: "Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent."

I would like to wish you all the very best on your journey of self-exploration, and I would like to thank Vinay for providing this guidebook.

If you knew you had a treasure worth

millions of dollars buried in your backyard,

wouldn’t you be digging and searching

for that treasure all the time?

Well, most of us are sitting on a

large treasure but unaware of it,

    thereby living poorly.

    Go within, find your treasure,

    discover your diamond!

    Preface

I t is not by coincidence that you are exploring this book. You must be ready to discover your diamond. It is my promise to you that you will surely discover your diamond if you follow all the recommendations listed in this book. This book will not only advise you on what-to-do but also on how-to with simple step-by-step guidance. As you turn the pages, you will learn how to uncover and shine your diamond. The diamond, in most cases, is covered in ALGAE - which is Attachment, Lust, Greed, Anger, and Ego . Just as the cutting and polishing of a diamond provide the shine to it, your life’s situations are designed by the universe to do the necessary cutting and polishing to shine your diamond. The diamond is only symbolic; know that you are much more precious than any diamond!

Almost all the people I ask want to be something other than what they are now. The big question is, why are they not being that? What’s stopping them? People invariably give many reasons why they are not what they want to be. This got me thinking that there has to be a better way to live life. It got so compelling that I left behind my career in a Fortune 500 company and delved into understanding the human mindset. It became my mission to find the secret and help millions of people to get out of the rat race. This book is a result of that quest. It is borne out of my own experience and a fusion of Eastern and Western values and wisdom. It is a compilation of the insights collected over a lifetime of self-discovery. The insights gained in transforming my own life and many others that I have coached have formed the genesis of this book. This book has been written to share these insights to help you discover your diamond.

It all started with a chance reading of the book The Celestine Prophecy by James Redfield in the year 2005. It pulled me into the world of spirits and understanding the human consciousness. And then it was one book after another that took me deeper and deeper into the mystery of the world within. Thoughts of Osho have profoundly influenced my life. I am an avid bushwalker and collect amazing insights from my time in the bush, where Mother Nature reveals her deep secrets. It’s not too often that you get to know the secrets to discover your diamond from a life coach who is IIT educated, has an MBA degree, is a former executive of a Fortune 500 company, and is coached by Mother Nature!

The meaning of life is to find your gift.

The purpose of life is to give it away.

    - Pablo Picasso

It gives me great joy in being a catalyst in transforming lives - whether one of my life coaching clients or one of the students from The Smith Family that I mentor. I am confident that this book will help me achieve my mission to transform the lives of millions of people across the globe to live their full potential.

I will be very excited to hear your story of discovering your diamond. Once you have discovered your diamond, please pay it forward by gifting copies of this book to your friends and family so that they can benefit too. Gift it to the staff in your organisation. Motivated staff are the real assets of any organisation. You never know how many lives we can touch this way to make a difference. Every person we touch, move, and inspire becomes a change agent to make the world a happy place. And you have no idea how many lives each person will touch, further making a difference in so many other lives. As Karen Jensen puts it, You can count the seeds in an apple, but you can’t count the apples in a seed.

Although this book is coming through me, I cannot claim to be the sole author of this book. Like a honey bee that collects nectar from multiple flowers to produce honey, I have downloaded insights from the universe and various other sources to deliver the honey in the form of this book. You will notice the different flavours of honey as you read through the book.

I am deeply touched by your gesture of choosing to read this book. However, statistics suggest that only 20 per cent of the people who buy a book actually read that book. And out of those 20 per cent of the readers, only 20 per cent commit to taking the actions suggested in the book. So, the bottom line is that only about 4 per cent of people will possibly benefit from the book. Are you committing to be in that 4 per cent club?

It is my guarantee that when you read this book and implement all the suggestions continuously for 100 days, your life will transform. I have committed the rest of my life to touch, move and inspire millions of
