Gaslighting Recovery Explained
How do you know if you have been ‘Gaslit’? The term ‘gaslighting’ is derived from a film of the name ‘Gaslight’, where the husband deliberately tries to convince his wife, she is going mad, in order to have her committed and gain access to her fortune. If you have never watched that film, I highly recommend it.
Gaslighting is a form of psychological torture, but the subject of that torture may be so detached from the reality of the situation due to being brainwashed by their abuser, that they don’t realize that they are undergoing a systematic attack on their sense of reality.
Are You Currently Being ‘Gaslit’?
The abuser will act in an unreasonable way and if you try and confront them, it will always be your fault in some way, never theirs. You are always on the back foot, always apologizing, always unsure of yourself. They may say you are crazy; they will probably tell friends and family you are unstable.
One minute they are as sweet as can be, and then as soon as you start to relax into any sense of stability, they become withdrawn, distant and changeable.
Their defence is always plausible deniability, you never saw what you saw, your memories are faulty, you just imagined it, you are over-reacting, you are acting crazy.
When you try and have a real conversation about what is going on they may refuse to engage, they always deny and they always spin events,
